Rameshwaram Jyotirlinga: Timings, 22 Theertham, How to Reach

Quick answer: Rameshwaram Jyotirlinga is the Ramanathaswamy temple on Pamban island, Tamil Nadu, about 170 km (3.5 to 4 hours) from Madurai. It is open about 5 am to 1 pm and 3 pm to 9 pm. The crystal-linga (spatika linga) aradhana is at about 5:10 am. Yatris bathe at Agni Theertham and the 22 temple wells (ticket about Rs 25) before darshan in dry clothes. Plan two nights.

Updated for the 2027 yatra season (facts checked October 2026)

Rameshwaram is both the southernmost Jyotirlinga and one of the four Char Dham of India, so for many families it is the most important stop of a lifetime yatra. It is also the one Jyotirlinga with a fixed order of rituals: sea bath, then the 22 theertham bath, then darshan. This guide explains that sequence, the daily puja schedule, dress, how to reach across the Pamban bridges, and how to combine Rameshwaram with Madurai, Dhanushkodi and the Kashi tradition.

What is the legend of Rameshwaram?

According to the Ramayana tradition, Shri Ram wished to worship Bhagwan Shiva here to atone for killing Ravana, who was a Brahmin. He sent Hanuman to Kailash to bring a linga. When Hanuman was delayed and the auspicious moment drew near, Mata Sita shaped a linga from the sand of the shore, and Ram worshipped it. This is the Ramalingam, the main linga in the sanctum.

When Hanuman returned with his linga and was disappointed, Ram installed it beside the first as the Vishwalingam (or Kashilingam) and ordained that it be worshipped first. That custom is still followed. The name Rameshwaram is read both as “the Ishwara of Ram” and “Ram, whose Ishwara is Shiva”. Another tradition places Ram’s worship before the crossing to Lanka; both are honoured.

The temple is famous for its corridors, the longest of any Hindu temple, with over a thousand carved pillars and a total length of roughly 1,200 metres. Much of it was built between the 12th and 18th centuries under the Pandya rulers and the Sethupathis of Ramanathapuram.

The right order: Agni Theertham, 22 theerthams, then darshan

  1. Agni Theertham: take a dip in the sea at the beach just outside the east gate. Bathing may be stopped when the sea is rough.
  2. 22 theertham snan: inside the temple are 22 sacred wells, each with its own name and believed power. Buy the ticket (about Rs 25 per person) at the counter. Temple staff draw water from each well and pour a bucket over you in turn, so you never bathe in a shared tank. It takes 30 to 60 minutes.
  3. Change into dry clothes in the changing rooms. Wet clothes are not allowed in the sanctum.
  4. Darshan of Vishwalingam first, then Ramanathaswamy (Ramalingam), then Parvathavardhini Amman’s shrine.

The theertham bath is usually available roughly 5:30 am to 12:30 pm and 3 pm to 7 pm. It is not compulsory; many elderly yatris take darshan only, or a symbolic sprinkle.

Darshan tickets, dress and rules

  • General darshan: free, no booking.
  • Special/quick darshan: paid tickets of roughly Rs 100 to 200 are sold at temple counters; rates change, so buy only at the official counter. Archana and abhishek can be booked through the official HR&CE website or at the temple.
  • Dress: traditional Indian clothes are expected. Men usually wear a dhoti or trousers with a shirt; women a saree, salwar suit or half-saree. Shorts and sleeveless tops are turned away.
  • Mobile phones and cameras are not allowed inside; lockers are near the gates.
  • Carry a towel and a full change of clothes in a bag for the theertham bath.

When is the best time to visit Rameshwaram?

October to March is most comfortable, though the island is humid all year. The north-east monsoon (October to December) brings rain and occasional cyclone alerts, when Dhanushkodi and sea bathing may be closed. April to June is hot. The busiest days are Mahashivratri (6 March 2027 by the panchang), Thai Amavasai and Aadi Amavasai, when lakhs come for tarpan at Agni Theertham, and the Ramalinga Pratishtha festival.

Nearby tirthas

  • Agni Theertham: the sea at the temple’s east gate, also used for pitru tarpan.
  • Gandhamadhana Parvatham: a small hill with Ram’s footprints (Ramar Padam), about 3 km away.
  • Kothandaramaswamy temple: on the road to Dhanushkodi, where Vibhishana is believed to have surrendered to Ram.
  • Dhanushkodi and Arichal Munai: the ruined town destroyed by the 1964 cyclone, and the tip from which Ram Setu is said to begin.
  • Devipattinam (Navabashanam): nine stones in the sea, believed to be installed by Ram for the Navagrahas.
  • Thiruppullani and Sethukarai: on the mainland, linked with Ram’s prayer to the sea.
  • Meenakshi Amman, Madurai: on the way in or out.

Kashi and Rameshwaram: completing the yatra

An old tradition links the two ends of India. Pilgrims take sand from Rameshwaram’s shore to immerse in the Ganga at Kashi, and bring Ganga jal from Kashi to offer to Ramanathaswamy, considering the yatra complete only when both are done. If you have already been to Kashi Vishwanath, carry a small sealed bottle of Ganga jal; the temple has a counter for Ganga jal abhishek.

Combining Rameshwaram with other Jyotirlingas

Rameshwaram is the only Jyotirlinga in Tamil Nadu. The nearest other Jyotirlinga is Mallikarjuna at Srisailam, reached by flying Madurai or Chennai to Hyderabad. Within Tamil Nadu, a week-long Shiva circuit from Chennai covers the Pancha Bhoota temples, Thanjavur and Madurai before Rameshwaram. For all twelve, see our 12 Jyotirlinga list.

Frequently asked questions

What are the Rameshwaram temple timings?

The Ramanathaswamy temple is generally open from about 5 am to 1 pm and from 3 pm to 9 pm. The first puja, Palliyarai deepa aradhana, is at 5 am and the spatika linga aradhana at about 5:10 am. The last puja is around 8:45 pm. Timings change on festival days, so check the official HR&CE website.

What is the spatika linga darshan at Rameshwaram?

It is the darshan of a crystal linga kept in the temple, shown with a deepa aradhana at about 5:10 am, in the first hour after the temple opens. Many devotees consider it the most auspicious darshan of the day. Reach the queue well before 5 am, especially on weekends and festival days.

What is the 22 theertham bath and how much does it cost?

Inside the temple are 22 sacred wells. Temple staff draw water from each and pour a bucket over you in turn, after you have bathed in the sea at Agni Theertham. The ticket is about Rs 25 per person. Carry a towel and dry clothes, since wet clothes are not allowed into the sanctum.

Is the theertham bath compulsory before darshan?

No. It is a strong tradition, but darshan is open to all without it. Elderly or unwell yatris often take only a symbolic sprinkle of water, or go straight to darshan in clean dry clothes. If you do take the bath, finish it before darshan, never after.

What is the dress code at Ramanathaswamy temple?

Traditional Indian clothes are expected. Men usually wear a dhoti or trousers with a shirt, and women a saree, salwar suit or half-saree. Shorts, sleeveless tops and wet clothes are not allowed into the sanctum. Phones and cameras must be left in lockers outside the temple.

How do we reach Rameshwaram from Madurai?

By road it is about 170 km, 3.5 to 4 hours, crossing the Pamban road bridge onto the island. By rail, trains run to Rameswaram station, which is under a kilometre from the temple, over the new Pamban rail bridge opened in 2025. Madurai has the nearest airport, with flights from major cities.

How many days are enough for Rameshwaram?

Two nights on the island is ideal. It allows an early spatika linga darshan, the full Agni Theertham and 22-well sequence without rushing, and a drive to Dhanushkodi in the cooler part of the day. Add a night in Madurai for Meenakshi Amman, which most families do not want to miss.

Why is Rameshwaram both a Jyotirlinga and a Char Dham?

Ramanathaswamy is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas named in the stotram, and Rameshwaram is also the southern dham of the four Char Dham of India, with Badrinath, Dwarka and Puri. That makes it unique: a single darshan fulfils two of the great yatra sankalps, which is why so many families plan it with special care.
