Highlights & Route
Rameshwaram is the southern Jyotirlinga and one of the Char Dham. The Ramayana tells that Rama worshipped Shiva here before crossing to Lanka, and that Sita shaped the lingam from sand when Hanuman’s journey to fetch one from Kailash took too long. Both lingams, Ramalingam and Vishwalingam, are worshipped inside Ramanathaswamy temple today, in a complex famous for the longest temple corridors in India, lined with over a thousand carved pillars.
This 3-day yatra starts and ends at Madurai, which has the nearest airport and main railway junction, about 170 km from Rameshwaram. You spend two nights on the island so that the traditional sequence can be followed properly: bathe in the sea at Agni Theertham, then in the 22 sacred wells inside the temple, then take darshan in dry clothes. There is also time for Dhanushkodi, the ghost town at the tip of the island where the Bay of Bengal meets the Indian Ocean, and for the smaller shrines connected with the Rama story.
On the last day the drive back to Madurai includes darshan at Meenakshi Amman temple, so that the yatra closes with one of the great Shakti temples of the South. We arrange the private vehicle, hotel and pure-vegetarian breakfast and dinner, and help with the theertham tickets and any special darshan. The plan is comfortable for elderly yatris and children, and our Dehradun team stays available by phone and WhatsApp.

Good to know before you book
- Ramanathaswamy temple is open roughly 5 am to 1 pm and 3 pm to 9 pm. The 22 theertham bath is done in the morning or afternoon session for a small ticket (Rs 25 per person at the time of writing); temple staff pour a bucket from each well over you, so carry a change of clothes and a towel.
- Wet clothes are not allowed into the inner sanctum. Men are expected to wear a dhoti or trousers with a shirt, women a saree, salwar or half-saree; shorts and sleeveless tops are turned away.
- Mobile phones and cameras are not allowed inside the temple; lockers are available at the east gate.
- Dhanushkodi, about 20 km from the temple, is reached by a tar road to the Arichal Munai tip. The road can be closed during cyclone alerts, usually between October and December.
- Madurai to Rameshwaram is about 170 km, 3.5 to 4 hours, crossing the Pamban road bridge; the new vertical-lift rail bridge beside it opened in 2025 and is visible from the road.
- Best months are October to March, though the island is humid year-round. Mahashivratri and Thai Amavasai bring the heaviest crowds.
