Panj Takht yatra at a glance
The Panj Takht are the five seats of authority in Sikhism: Akal Takht Sahib at Amritsar, Takht Sri Keshgarh Sahib at Anandpur Sahib, Takht Sri Damdama Sahib at Talwandi Sabo, Takht Sri Patna Sahib in Bihar, and Takht Sri Hazur Sahib at Nanded in Maharashtra. Three are in Punjab and can be covered in about 4 days; Patna and Nanded are far apart and need separate journeys or flights. There is no trekking. October to March is the best season. Our Dehradun team plans hotels, vehicle and routes for families of every faith.
Which Panj Takht yatra is right for you?
Most families begin with the three Punjab Takhts, which our four-day Panj Takht Yatra covers from Delhi to Chandigarh. For Patna Sahib, choose the Patna yatra, which also includes the Chandika Sthan Shakti Peeth at Munger. For Hazur Sahib, the Aurangabad Nanded yatra adds Ajanta, Ellora and the Grishneshwar Jyotirlinga. The table lists every yatra in this category; we can join them into one complete Panj Takht plan on request.
| Yatra | Duration | Starts from | Best for | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Panj Takht Yatra | 4 days / 3 nights | Delhi | Three Punjab Takhts in four days | On request |
| Patna with Chandika Sthan Yatra | 5 days / 4 nights | Patna | Takht Patna Sahib plus Chandika Sthan | On request |
| Aurangabad Nanded Yatra | 7 days / 6 nights | Aurangabad (Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar) | Hazur Sahib, Ajanta–Ellora, Grishneshwar | On request |
What are the five Takhts and where are they?
| Takht | Where | Why it is sacred |
|---|---|---|
| Sri Akal Takht Sahib | Amritsar, Punjab, facing Sri Harmandir Sahib | Founded by Guru Hargobind Sahib as the seat of temporal authority; the highest Takht |
| Takht Sri Keshgarh Sahib | Anandpur Sahib, Punjab | Where Guru Gobind Singh Ji created the Khalsa on Vaisakhi in 1699 |
| Takht Sri Damdama Sahib | Talwandi Sabo, near Bathinda, Punjab | Where Guru Gobind Singh Ji prepared the complete recension of the Guru Granth Sahib; recognised as a Takht in 1966 |
| Takht Sri Patna Sahib | Patna, Bihar | Birthplace of Guru Gobind Singh Ji in 1666 |
| Takht Sri Hazur Sahib | Nanded, Maharashtra, on the Godavari | Where Guru Gobind Singh Ji spent his last days in 1708 and passed Guruship to the Guru Granth Sahib |
How to plan a Panj Takht yatra across India
The five Takhts span the country: Talwandi Sabo, Amritsar and Anandpur Sahib are within a day's drive of each other in Punjab, while Patna lies far to the east in Bihar and Nanded far to the south in Maharashtra; Amritsar to Nanded alone is over 2,000 km by rail. The simplest plan is in three parts:
- Punjab (4 days): Delhi to Talwandi Sabo (about 330 km, six to seven hours), on to Tarn Taran and two nights in Amritsar, then Anandpur Sahib (about 190 km) and Kiratpur Sahib, ending in Chandigarh. This is our Panj Takht Yatra.
- Patna Sahib (2 to 5 days): fly or take a train to Patna. Our Patna with Chandika Sthan Yatra adds Patan Devi, Mahavir Mandir and the Chandika Sthan at Munger, about 180 km away.
- Hazur Sahib (3 to 7 days): Nanded has an airport with limited flights, and the daily Sachkhand Express runs between Amritsar and Hazur Sahib Nanded, a journey of about 34 hours. Our Aurangabad Nanded Yatra gives three nights at Nanded.
Families short on time often do Punjab first and add Patna and Nanded on a later visit. We can also link the Nanded leg with Grishneshwar; see our Jyotirlinga yatras and the 12 Jyotirlinga list.
Gurdwara etiquette for every yatri
- Cover your head at all times inside the gurdwara complex. Scarves are provided free at the entrance.
- Remove shoes and socks, deposit them at the free joda ghar, and wash your feet in the water channel before entering.
- Alcohol, tobacco and non-vegetarian food are not allowed on the premises.
- Sit on the floor in the darbar hall, and do not turn your back towards the Guru Granth Sahib while seated close by.
- Langar is open to everyone, of every faith. Sit in the pangat, accept the food with both hands, and take only what you will finish.
- Doing seva, such as washing dishes or helping in the joda ghar, is welcomed and is a beautiful part of the yatra.
Sri Harmandir Sahib at Amritsar is open around the clock. The early morning Prakash, when the Guru Granth Sahib is brought from the Akal Takht, and the night Sukhasan are the most moving times to be present.
When is the best time for a Panj Takht yatra?
October to March is comfortable across Punjab, Bihar and Maharashtra, though December and January bring dense fog in Punjab and cold mornings in Patna. April to June is very hot everywhere on the route.
Gurpurabs bring the largest sangat and full hotels. Dates reported so far for 2027:
- Prakash Parv of Guru Gobind Singh Ji at Patna Sahib: the 360th Prakash Parv is planned for 13 to 16 January 2027, according to the Patna district administration.
- Hola Mohalla at Anandpur Sahib: held from the day after Holi, in late March 2027; confirm exact dates closer to the time.
- Vaisakhi: mid-April, with large gatherings at Keshgarh Sahib and Damdama Sahib.
These are deeply moving times to visit, but book rooms several months ahead. Check our yatra calendar 2027 for other festival dates.
What we arrange
We arrange hotels close to the gurdwaras, a private vehicle with an experienced driver, vegetarian breakfast and dinner as listed in each package, early starts for the Attari–Wagah ceremony, and timing advice for Prakash and Sukhasan. Families who wish to stay in gurdwara sarais can do so; tell us and we will plan around it. Our Dehradun team stays on call throughout. Visiting the Golden Temple without the full circuit? Frequently asked questions
How many days does a full Panj Takht yatra take?
The three Punjab Takhts take about four days by road. Adding Patna Sahib and Hazur Sahib needs flights or long train journeys, so a complete Panj Takht yatra usually takes 10 to 14 days in one go. Many families split it into two or three shorter yatras spread over a year.
Can non-Sikhs visit the Takhts and the Golden Temple?
Yes. Every gurdwara, including all five Takhts and Sri Harmandir Sahib, welcomes people of every faith. Cover your head, remove your shoes, wash your feet, and do not carry alcohol or tobacco. Langar is served free to all, and visitors are welcome to join in seva.
How do I travel from Amritsar to Hazur Sahib Nanded?
The daily Sachkhand Express runs between Amritsar and Hazur Sahib Nanded, covering about 2,082 km in roughly 34 hours. Nanded also has an airport with limited flights, so many yatris fly to a larger city and drive. We suggest the best option for your dates and starting city.
Can senior citizens do the Panj Takht yatra?
Yes. There is no trekking, and gurdwara complexes are on level ground with sevadars always ready to help. The main effort is long road journeys and sitting on the floor in the darbar. We keep driving days reasonable and can arrange wheelchairs where available.
When is Hola Mohalla 2027 at Anandpur Sahib?
Hola Mohalla begins the day after Holi and runs for about three days at Anandpur Sahib, with Nihang displays of martial skill. In 2027 it falls in late March. Exact dates are fixed closer to the time, so check with us before booking. Hotels in Anandpur Sahib and Kiratpur fill quickly.
Where can I stay near the Takhts?
All five Takhts have gurdwara sarais for the sangat, and there are hotels within a short distance of each. Our packages use hotels close to the gurdwaras for comfort, especially with elders. If you prefer to stay in a sarai, tell us and we will plan the days around it.
Tell us your dates, starting city and which Takhts you want to visit, and we will send a clear day-by-day plan. Use the enquiry form on this page or call/WhatsApp us; our numbers are on the Contact page.
