Panj Takht Yatra

4 Days

Highlights & Route

The Panj Takht are the five seats of temporal authority in Sikhism: Sri Akal Takht Sahib at Amritsar, Takht Sri Keshgarh Sahib at Anandpur Sahib, Takht Sri Damdama Sahib at Talwandi Sabo, Takht Sri Patna Sahib in Bihar and Takht Sachkhand Sri Hazur Sahib at Nanded. Three of them lie in Punjab within a day’s drive of each other, and this four-day journey from Delhi links all three, with Harmandir Sahib, the Golden Temple, at its heart. Patna Sahib and Hazur Sahib can be added as separate legs for those completing the full Panj Takht yatra.

The route runs north-west from Delhi to Talwandi Sabo, where Guru Gobind Singh rested after the battles of 1705 and where the final recension of the Guru Granth Sahib was prepared. From there we go to Tarn Taran and its great sarovar, then Amritsar for two nights: evening and morning at Harmandir Sahib and Akal Takht, Durgiana temple, Ram Tirath and the beating-retreat ceremony at the Attari–Wagah border. The last day climbs into the Shivalik foothills to Anandpur Sahib, birthplace of the Khalsa, and Kiratpur, ending at Chandigarh.

This is a comfortable yatra on good highways, suitable for all ages. The first day is the longest drive, about 330 km. Gurdwara customs are simple and the langar is open to everyone. Price is on request because Amritsar hotel rates change sharply with season and Sikh festival dates.

Route

Delhi → Talwandi Sabo (1 night) → Tarn Taran → Amritsar (2 nights) → Attari border → Anandpur Sahib → Kiratpur Sahib → Chandigarh

Good to know before you book

  • Delhi to Talwandi Sabo is about 330 km (six to seven hours); Amritsar to Anandpur Sahib about 190 km, and Anandpur to Chandigarh about 90 km.
  • At every gurdwara: head covered, shoes and socks off, feet washed at the entrance, no alcohol, tobacco or non-vegetarian food on the premises.
  • Harmandir Sahib is open to all faiths around the clock; the pre-dawn Prakash ceremony and the evening Sukhasan are the most moving times to be present.
  • The Attari–Wagah beating-retreat ceremony is held every evening before sunset; the border is about 30 km from Amritsar, and seating is first-come, so we leave early.
  • Carry a valid photo ID for the border ceremony; bags are restricted at the stands.
  • Hola Mohalla at Anandpur Sahib (March), Baisakhi (April) and Gurpurabs bring very large crowds and full hotels across Punjab.
