Highlights & Route
Tamil Nadu has only one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, Ramanathaswamy at Rameshwaram, but it holds the richest concentration of great Shiva temples in India. This 7-day road yatra builds a southward route from Chennai to Rameshwaram that takes in four of the five Pancha Bhoota Sthalams, the temples where Shiva is worshipped as the five elements: Ekambareswarar at Kanchipuram (earth), Arunachaleswarar at Tiruvannamalai (fire), Nataraja at Chidambaram (space) and Jambukeswarar at Thiruvanaikaval near Trichy (water). The fifth, Kalahasti (air), lies just across the border in Andhra Pradesh and can be added at the start.
Between them the route passes the Brihadeeswarar temple at Thanjavur, the thousand-year-old Chola masterpiece, and ends with two nights at Rameshwaram, where the full ritual of sea bath, 22 theertham snan and Jyotirlinga darshan can be done at leisure before the drive to Madurai and Meenakshi Amman. Each night is spent in a temple town, and every morning begins with a darshan when the temples are coolest and least crowded.
The pace is set for families with elderly members: no drive is longer than about 4 hours, lunch is left open so you can eat at the many pure-veg messes of the temple towns, and the Rameshwaram stay is two nights so that the rituals are not rushed. A private vehicle and driver stay with you for the whole week, hotels and vegetarian breakfast and dinner are included, and our Dehradun team is a phone call or WhatsApp message away.

Good to know before you book
- Tamil Nadu temples close for the midday break, usually from about 12:30 pm to 4 pm. We plan every darshan for the morning or evening session and use the middle of the day for travel.
- Dress is traditional in all these temples: dhoti or trousers and shirt for men, saree, salwar or half-saree for women. Shorts, sleeveless tops and lungis are refused at the gate. Some sanctums ask men to remove shirts.
- Rameshwaram’s 22 theertham bath is done before darshan for a small ticket (Rs 25 per person at the time of writing); carry old clothes and a towel.
- Most temples do not allow phones or cameras inside; cloakrooms are available. Non-Hindus are not admitted to the inner sanctum at some temples, including Meenakshi Amman and Srirangam.
- Tiruvannamalai’s 14 km girivalam around the hill draws lakhs of pilgrims on full-moon nights, and the Karthigai Deepam festival in November or December fills the town; hotel rates rise sharply.
- October to February is the best season. March to June is hot across the state; the north-east monsoon (October to December) brings rain to the coast and occasional cyclone alerts at Rameshwaram.
