Highlights & Route
Srisailam sits on a flat-topped hill above the Krishna river, deep inside the Nallamala forest of Andhra Pradesh. The Mallikarjuna Swamy temple here is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, and right beside it stands the shrine of Bhramaramba Devi, counted among the Shakti Peeths. Very few places in India let you offer prayers at a Jyotirlinga and a Shakti Peeth within the same compound, which is why so many families from the north put Srisailam on their list once they have finished the Himalayan dhams.
We start and finish in Hyderabad so that you can fly in from Dehradun or Delhi without any awkward connections. The first two days are spent in the city at a relaxed pace: Golconda Fort, the Qutb Shahi tombs, Charminar and the lakeside at Hussain Sagar. On the third morning we leave early for the roughly 215 km drive to Srisailam, the last stretch of it through the tiger reserve, and reach in time for an unhurried evening darshan. You sleep at Srisailam and return to Hyderabad the next day.
This is a gentle itinerary. There is no trekking, hotel stays are in proper towns, and the only real demand is the long forest drive, which we break with tea halts. It suits elderly parents, first-time visitors to the south and anyone who wants a Jyotirlinga darshan without a week off work.
Route
Hyderabad (2 nights) → Srisailam via the Nallamala forest road (1 night) → Hyderabad
Good to know before you book
- Srisailam is about 215 km from Hyderabad and the drive takes five to six hours with halts; the forest section has check posts and traffic is not permitted after dark, so we always travel in daylight.
- Sparsha (touch) darshan at the Jyotirlinga runs in fixed slots and is restricted on weekends and Mondays; if touching the lingam matters to you, tell us so we can plan the Srisailam day on a weekday.
- Karthika Masam (roughly November) and Maha Shivaratri bring very heavy crowds; darshan can take several hours on those days.
- Hyderabad monuments and museums charge their own entry tickets, payable on the spot; most museums are closed one day a week.
- Hotels in Srisailam are simple compared with city hotels. We book the best available category, but please come with modest expectations.
- Vegetarian food is easy to find everywhere on this route, and the temple runs an annadanam (free meal) hall for devotees.
