Highlights & Route
The overland yatra follows the road that pilgrims have used since the Kyirong border reopened: north from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi, across the Rasuwagadhi bridge into Tibet, and then west along the plateau through Saga to Mansarovar. There are no small aircraft or helicopters to wait for, so weather delays are rare, and the gradual climb over several days is the kindest possible introduction to altitude.
Because everything moves by road, this is also the most economical way to complete the full yatra, parikrama included. Groups are larger than on the helicopter routes and travel together in coaches, which many families enjoy: bhajans on the bus, shared meals and new friends by the time you reach the lake. The programme includes a Kathmandu local darshan day, a rest day at Kyirong, puja and the lake circuit at Mansarovar, and the three-day walk around Kailash.
Nights are in hotels at Kathmandu, Kyirong, Saga or Dongba and Darchen, in a lodge at Syabrubesi, in a guest house by the lake and in simple homestays on the two parikrama nights. Meals are pure vegetarian throughout. The season runs from May to about mid-October, when the Kyirong road is open.
Route
Kathmandu → Syabrubesi → Rasuwagadhi → Kyirong → Saga or Dongba → Lake Mansarovar → Darchen → Yam Dwar → Dirapuk → Dolma La → Zuthulpuk → Darchen → Saga → Kyirong → Rasuwagadhi → Kathmandu
Good to know before you book
- Expect long bus days: Kyirong to Saga and Saga to Mansarovar are each several hundred kilometres. The roads are good but the hours are long, so carry a neck pillow, snacks and motion-sickness tablets.
- The Kathmandu–Syabrubesi stretch is a winding hill road of about 155 km that takes 6 to 8 hours; in monsoon it can be slow.
- Passport valid six months beyond return, submitted about a month before departure for the Chinese group visa. The group enters and exits Tibet together.
- After the June 2026 MEA advisory, we do not ask yatris to reach Kathmandu until the visa and permit are in hand.
- Dolma La is about 5,630 m; the parikrama is optional and non-walkers wait at Darchen at their own cost.
- The price is per person on triple-sharing in Tibet; GST and TCS are extra. 2027 departure dates will be shared on enquiry.
Yatra Highlights
- Entirely by road via Kyirong, so no weather-dependent flights
- Slow, natural acclimatisation with a rest day at Kyirong
- Most economical way to do the full yatra with Mansarovar puja and 3-day parikrama
