Highlights & Route
In the far north-west corner of Nepal, the Limi valley of Humla district runs up to the Tibetan border directly south of Mount Kailash. From a high viewpoint above the valley, called Limi Lapcha, the south face of Kailash and the waters of Lake Mansarovar can be seen across the border on a clear day. For yatris who cannot, or do not wish to, travel into Tibet, this is the closest ground darshan of Kailash that remains open, and it needs no Chinese visa.
The journey begins in Lucknow. A road transfer takes you to Nepalgunj on the Nepal side of the border, where we visit the Bageshwari temple and hold a briefing. The next morning a scheduled mountain flight climbs to Simikot, the district headquarters of Humla at about 2,900 m, with a day there to acclimatise. Jeeps then take you on a long, rough drive up to Tumling in the Limi valley, at around 4,150 m, your base for two nights. The darshan day is a vehicle ride up to the Limi Lapcha viewpoint, where we spend the morning with prayers and a havan while the mountain and the lake stand in front of you. The return retraces the route to Simikot, Nepalgunj and Lucknow.
This is a serious high-altitude journey, not a sightseeing tour. Tumling is higher than Kedarnath, the viewpoint is higher still, nights can drop below freezing even in summer, and accommodation beyond Simikot is in village homestays with very basic facilities. The reward is a darshan that few pilgrims have had, in a quiet valley with no crowds at all. Our team arranges the Humla permits, carries oxygen and a medical kit, and keeps the pace slow.

Good to know before you book
- Indian citizens do not need a visa for Nepal, but you must carry an original passport or Election Commission voter ID. Aadhaar alone is not accepted for the flight within Nepal.
- Limi valley is a restricted area of Nepal and a special permit is required; we arrange it, which is why we need your ID copies and photographs well in advance.
- The season runs from about May to September, when the road from Simikot to Tumling is open. Clear mornings are most likely in May, June and September.
- The Nepalgunj to Simikot flight is a small aircraft with a strict baggage limit, usually around 10 to 15 kg per person, and it is often delayed by weather. Keep a spare day in your onward plans.
- Tumling is at about 4,150 m. Anyone with heart, lung or blood-pressure conditions must consult a doctor before booking.
- Carry Indian rupees in 100-rupee notes and some Nepali currency; higher-value Indian notes are not accepted in Nepal, and there are no ATMs beyond Simikot.
