Highlights & Route

Rameswaram, on Pamban island off the Tamil Nadu coast, is the southern dham of the Bada Char Dham and the place where Rama is believed to have worshipped Shiva before and after crossing to Lanka. The Ramanathaswamy temple holds one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, and its corridors, the longest of any temple in India, are a sight in themselves. This programme gives you two nights on the island and a night in Madurai, so that both the Jyotirlinga and the Meenakshi Amman temple are covered without rushing.

The heart of the visit is the bath in the 22 theerthams, the sacred wells inside the temple, each with its own name and story, taken after a dip in the sea at Agni Theertham and before darshan in dry clothes. Beyond the temple the road runs 20 km through sand and sea to Dhanushkodi, the town destroyed by the 1964 cyclone, and on to Arichal Munai, the tip of land from which the Ram Setu is said to begin.

You start and end at Madurai, which has an airport and major rail links. The drive to the island crosses the Pamban bridge, with the new vertical-lift rail bridge alongside. Breakfast and dinner are vegetarian, the vehicle is private to your group, and our team briefs you on temple customs, dress and bathing arrangements before you travel.

Route

Madurai → Pamban bridge → Rameswaram → Ramanathaswamy temple → Gandhamadana Parvatham → Dhanushkodi → Arichal Munai (Ram Setu point) → Rameswaram → Madurai (Meenakshi Amman temple) → Madurai

Good to know before you book

  • The 22-theertham bath is done in the morning. You get wet, so carry a change of clothes; wet clothes are not allowed into the inner temple and there are changing rooms near the corridors.
  • Dress is traditional: dhoti or trousers with a shirt for men, saree or salwar for women. Shorts and sleeveless tops are not permitted.
  • The temple opens before dawn and closes around 1 pm, reopening in the afternoon until evening. The Jyotirlinga darshan queue is shortest early in the morning.
  • Dhanushkodi is reached by a tarred road to Arichal Munai; vehicles stop at the end point and you walk a short way on sand. There is no shade, so carry caps and water.
  • October to March is the comfortable season; April to June is very hot. The Pamban road bridge can close briefly in high winds.
  • The price shown is per person on sharing basis for a standard group and changes with group size and hotel category.

Darshan, puja and timing notes

The Ramanathaswamy temple usually opens at about 5 am and closes around 1 pm, then reopens from about 3 pm to 9 pm. The first rituals of the day are the most sought after: the Palliyarai deepa aradhana at opening time and, a few minutes later, the aradhana of the Spatika linga, a small crystal linga shown only in this early slot. If you want that darshan, be in the queue before 5 am on Day 2.

  • Order of the morning: sea dip at Agni Theertham, the 22-theertham bath (a small ticket is bought at the counter), a change into dry clothes, then darshan. By tradition the Vishwalingam brought by Hanuman from Kailash receives worship before the Ramalingam installed by Sita, and many yatris follow the same order.
  • Later pujas: Kalasanthi around 10 am, Uchikala at noon, Sayaratcha around 6 pm and Arthajama around 8:30 pm. The evening is quieter than the morning and good for a slow walk through the corridors.
  • Phones: Tamil Nadu temples do not allow mobile phones inside; use the deposit counters at the entrance or leave the phone at the hotel.

Festivals to plan around. Maha Shivaratri (February–March) and the Thirukalyanam festival in the Tamil month of Aadi (July–August) are the temple’s big occasions. Aadi Amavasai, Thai Amavasai and Mahalaya Amavasya bring very large crowds to Agni Theertham for tarpan. If you are coming for ancestral rites, these days are ideal; if you want calm darshan, avoid them.

Is this yatra right for you?

This is one of the easiest dham yatras in India. Everything is at sea level, there is no trekking, and the only real effort is about an hour of walking barefoot on wet stone during the theertham bath, plus a short walk on sand at Arichal Munai. Senior citizens manage well if a family member walks beside them; children enjoy the shallow sea at Agni Theertham under supervision.

It may not suit you if you cannot stand for long periods in a queue, or if your only free dates fall in April–June, when the island is very hot by 10 am. In that case plan for October–March. If four days is too long, our shorter Ramanathaswamy Jyotirlinga yatra keeps the same core in three days. Families who are completing the Bada Char Dham can pair Rameswaram with Dwarkadhish or Jagannath Puri in a later season.

Getting there and nearby tirthas

Madurai airport is the usual gateway. Trains also run to Rameswaram station itself across the new Pamban rail bridge, which helps yatris coming from Chennai. On the island, Lakshmana Theertham, Rama Theertham and Villoondi Theertham are short drives from the temple. On the mainland, Devipattinam, where nine Navagraha stones stand in the sea, and the Thiruppullani Divya Desam can be added on the way back to Madurai if you tell us when booking.
