Omkareshwar Darshan Yatra: Narmada Jyotirlinga, MP

Omkareshwar is the Jyotirlinga that sits on an island. The Narmada bends around a hill called Mandhata so that, seen from above, the land takes the shape of the syllable Om, and the temple of Omkareshwar stands on its slope while Mamleshwar (also called Amareshwar) faces it from the south bank. Many pilgrims hold that the two together form one Jyotirlinga, so darshan at both is customary.

This 3-day plan pairs Omkareshwar with Mahakaleshwar in Ujjain, 140 km to the north, so that you complete two of the twelve Jyotirlingas on a single short yatra from Indore. Unlike a day-trip version, you sleep one night at Omkareshwar itself. That makes the difference: you get the evening aarti on the Narmada ghats, the early-morning darshan before the buses arrive, and time for the parikrama path around the island for those who are fit.

We build the yatra for families and elderly yatris: one night in each town, a private vehicle throughout, pure-vegetarian breakfast and dinner, and a driver who knows the ghat lanes. Our office handles your questions by phone and WhatsApp before and during the yatra. You arrange travel to Indore, which has the airport and the best train connections in the region.

Indore airport or railway station → Ujjain (Mahakaleshwar, Harsiddhi, Kaal Bhairav, Sandipani Ashram) → Omkareshwar (Omkareshwar and Mamleshwar Jyotirlinga, Narmada ghats, optional parikrama) → Indore airport or railway station

Good to know before you book

• Omkareshwar temple is open from early morning until late evening, with a midday break of about an hour for bhog and a short closure in the late afternoon for shringar. The island is reached by a road bridge or a short motorboat ride.
• The parikrama of Mandhata island is about 7 km and takes 2 to 3 hours on foot, with some steep sections. It is optional and best done early morning.
• Mahakaleshwar in Ujjain has a free general queue and a paid shighra darshan line. The pre-dawn Bhasma Aarti needs a pass booked 30 days ahead on the temple committee’s own site; it is not included in this itinerary but we can register for you if you wish to stay an extra night.
• Indore to Ujjain is about 55 km (1.5 hours); Ujjain to Omkareshwar about 140 km (3.5 to 4 hours); Omkareshwar to Indore about 80 km (2 to 2.5 hours).
• Monkeys are common at both temples; keep prasad and spectacles secure.
• Best months are October to March. Shravan (July–August), Mahashivratri and Narmada Jayanti bring crowds and higher rates.
