Highlights & Route
Bhimashankar is the Jyotirlinga of the Western Ghats. The temple stands at about 1,000 metres on a forested ridge of the Sahyadri in Pune district, where the Bhima river rises before flowing south-east to join the Krishna. The story told here is of Shiva’s battle with the demon Tripurasura, after which the Lord rested on the hill and the sweat of the fight became the Bhima. The present temple, in the Nagara style with a later Maratha-period sabha mandap and a large bell gifted by Chimaji Appa, is small compared with the great Jyotirlingas of the plains, and that is part of its appeal.
Most visitors from Pune do Bhimashankar as a tiring single-day dash. This package instead gives you two nights near the temple so that darshan can be done early in the morning before the day-trip crowds arrive, with the rest of the day for the short walk to Gupt Bhimashankar, where the river appears from the rock, the Hanuman lake, and the viewpoints of the Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary, home of the Indian giant squirrel, Maharashtra’s state animal.
The temple is open all year. The monsoon turns the hill into a landscape of mist and waterfalls, popular with Pune families but slippery underfoot; October to February brings clear, cool weather and is the best time for elderly pilgrims. Mahashivratri and the Shravan Mondays see very large crowds and long queues.
Route
Pune → Chakan → Rajgurunagar → Manchar → Ghodegaon → Bhimashankar → Gupt Bhimashankar → Hanuman Lake → Nagphani viewpoint → Bhimashankar → Pune
Good to know before you book
- The drive from Pune is roughly 110 km and takes three to four hours, the last stretch on a winding ghat road.
- From the parking area a long flight of steps lined with shops leads down to the temple. There is no lift; those with knee trouble should take it slowly.
- Hotels at Bhimashankar are simple lodges and MTDC-style rooms; do not expect city hotel standards. Better hotels are available at Manchar, about 60 km away, if you prefer.
- Phone network is patchy on the hill and often absent inside the forest.
- Gupt Bhimashankar is a forest walk of about 1.5 km each way on an uneven path; wear proper shoes.
- Monsoon (June to September) means heavy rain, fog and leeches on forest paths; carry rain gear if travelling then.
Darshan, puja and timing notes
Check the 2026 rules before you travel. The Bhimashankar temple was closed to devotees from 9 January 2026 for redevelopment work (a new sabhamandap and stairway) linked to the 2027 Nashik Simhastha Kumbh, with daily puja continuing inside. Darshan resumed on 15 June 2026 with compulsory online registration on the temple committee’s website (shreebhimashankar.com), a daily cap reported at 1,000 devotees and a photo ID check. During Shravan 2026 the temple stayed open from 5 am to 9.30 pm. These rules may change again, so we confirm the current position and register your group before departure.
- Usual day: the temple opens before sunrise with the kakad aarti, followed by abhishek in the morning; darshan pauses briefly around the midday aarti and continues into the evening.
- Abhishek: rudrabhishek and laghu rudra can be arranged through the temple; dakshina is paid directly.
- Dress: modest, traditional clothing; carry a shawl for the cool, damp mornings on the hill.
Festivals to plan around: Maha Shivaratri on 6 March 2027, every Monday in Shravan (July–August) and Kartik Purnima. In 2026 the temple was shut to regular darshan through the Mahashivratri week because of the works, so do not assume festival access. The 2027 Simhastha’s Amrit snan days (2 August, 31 August and 11–12 September 2027) are likely to raise crowds across the Maharashtra Jyotirlingas.
Is this yatra right for you?
Bhimashankar sits at about 1,000 m in the forest, so altitude is not a concern. The real effort is the long flight of steps from the parking area down to the temple and back up, with no lift. Senior citizens can do it slowly with rests; anyone with serious knee trouble should tell us, as palkis are limited. Children enjoy the forest walk to Gupt Bhimashankar.
Choose a different plan if you are short of time (a Pune day visit is possible but tiring), or if you want several Jyotirlingas in one go. To check the current registration rules or change dates, use the enquiry form on this page or call/WhatsApp us (numbers on our Contact page).
