Quick answer: The most famous Shiva temples in Tamil Nadu are Ramanathaswamy in Rameswaram (the state’s only Jyotirlinga), the four Pancha Bhoota Sthalams at Chidambaram, Thiruvannamalai, Kanchipuram and Thiruvanaikaval, Brihadeeswarar in Thanjavur, Meenakshi Sundareswarar in Madurai and the temples of Kumbakonam. The fifth Pancha Bhoota temple, Srikalahasti, is in Andhra Pradesh. October to February is the best season, and a full circuit takes about a week.
Updated for the 2027 yatra season (facts checked November 2026).
Tamil Nadu has the richest concentration of great Shiva temples in India. Many were sung by the Nayanmars, the Tamil Shaiva saints whose hymns form the Tevaram, and the temples sung in these hymns are called Paadal Petra Sthalams. Their towering gopurams, long pillared corridors and daily abhishekams follow the Agama traditions, and festivals here are celebrated on a scale few places can match.
This guide covers the temples most yatris ask about, what makes each special, the festival to plan around, how to reach and how to join them into practical circuits. Darshan timings change around festivals and eclipses, so please check with the temple before you go.

What are the Pancha Bhoota Sthalams?
The Pancha Bhoota Sthalams are five temples where Shiva is worshipped as each of the five elements (pancha bhoota) that make up creation. Four are in Tamil Nadu and one, Srikalahasti, is just across the border in Andhra Pradesh.
| Element | Temple | Place | State | Name of the linga |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Earth (prithvi) | Ekambareswarar | Kanchipuram | Tamil Nadu | Prithvi linga, said to be of sand |
| Water (jala or appu) | Jambukeswarar | Thiruvanaikaval | Tamil Nadu | Appu linga, with water in the sanctum |
| Fire (agni) | Arunachaleswarar | Thiruvannamalai | Tamil Nadu | Agni linga; the hill itself is revered as Shiva |
| Air (vayu) | Srikalahasteeswara | Srikalahasti | Andhra Pradesh | Vayu linga |
| Space (akasha) | Thillai Nataraja | Chidambaram | Tamil Nadu | Akasha linga, the “Chidambara Rahasyam” |
Our six-day Panch Bhoota Stalam Yatra from Chennai covers all five, with Tirupati Balaji darshan on the way, since Srikalahasti is only about 40 km from Tirumala.
What is special about Chidambaram Nataraja temple?
Chidambaram is the Akasha (space) sthalam, and here Shiva is worshipped above all as Nataraja, the cosmic dancer, in the golden-roofed Kanaka Sabha. Beside him is the famous “Chidambara Rahasyam”: a curtain is drawn back to show an apparently empty space hung with golden bilva leaves, symbolising the formless Shiva. The temple also holds the shrine of Govindaraja Perumal, one of the 108 Divya Desams, so Shaivas and Vaishnavas worship in the same complex.
Unlike most large Tamil temples, Chidambaram is administered by the hereditary Podhu Dikshitar priests, following a Supreme Court ruling of 2014, and it keeps its own timings with a long afternoon closure. The evening puja is a lovely time to visit.
Festivals: Arudra Darshan in Margazhi (December to January) and Aani Thirumanjanam (June to July) are the two great festivals, when Nataraja comes out in procession. Panchangs give Arudra Darshan on 24 December 2026. The Natyanjali dance festival is held around Mahashivratri.
How to reach: Chidambaram has a railway station with trains from Chennai. It is about 230 km from Chennai by road and about 75 km from Kumbakonam.
How do you do Girivalam at Thiruvannamalai?
Thiruvannamalai is the Agni (fire) sthalam. The Arunachaleswarar temple, with its huge gopurams, stands at the foot of Arunachala hill, which is itself revered as Shiva. Sri Ramana Maharshi lived on this hill, and his ashram is near the start of the Girivalam path.
Girivalam is the walk around the hill, about 14 km on the paved path. Most devotees walk barefoot, clockwise, keeping the hill on their right.
- Begin at the Arunachaleswarar temple or the Raja Gopuram after darshan.
- Walk clockwise along the Girivalam road, keeping the hill on your right.
- Stop at the eight Ashta Lingams placed around the path, one for each direction, and at the smaller shrines on the way.
- Allow about four to five hours at a relaxed pace, carry water and rest when needed.
- End back at the temple for a final darshan.
On full-moon (Pournami) nights lakhs of devotees walk together, and on the biggest nights roads are closed to vehicles and hotels sell out. Senior citizens may prefer a quieter weekday morning, or to complete part of the path by auto-rickshaw.
Karthigai Deepam: In the Tamil month of Karthigai (November to December), the Maha Deepam is lit on the summit of Arunachala at dusk and can be seen for miles. Panchangs give Karthigai Deepam on 24 November 2026; the temple announces the Maha Deepam day each year. Expect very heavy crowds.
How to reach: Thiruvannamalai is about 190 km from Chennai by road and is often visited from Kanchipuram or Puducherry. Chennai is the most practical airport.
Why is Ekambareswarar in Kanchipuram important?
Ekambareswarar is the Prithvi (earth) sthalam. Tradition holds that Goddess Parvati made a Shivalinga of sand under a mango tree here and worshipped it with such devotion that she held it tightly when the Kampa river flooded. Because the linga is regarded as earth, it is not bathed with water, and the temple follows its own tradition of worship.
The ancient mango tree in the courtyard is said to bear fruit of four different tastes from its four branches. Its southern gopuram is among the tallest in Tamil Nadu, and the temple has a thousand-pillared hall. Kanchipuram is also home to the Kamakshi Amman temple, one of the great seats of the Goddess, so most yatris see both on the same day. Read our Kanchi Kamakshi Amman guide.
How to reach: Kanchipuram is about 75 km from Chennai, roughly two hours by road, and has a railway station.
What makes Jambukeswarar at Thiruvanaikaval unique?
Jambukeswarar is the Appu (water) sthalam. The linga sits in a low sanctum where a spring keeps water seeping around it, especially in the monsoon. Tradition holds that Goddess Akilandeswari, enshrined here, worshipped Shiva in this form, and in the noon puja the priest traditionally performs the ritual dressed as the Goddess.
The temple is on Srirangam island near Tiruchirappalli, a short drive from the Ranganathaswamy temple of Srirangam, so most families visit both together. Tiruchirappalli has an airport and a major railway junction.
Where is Srikalahasti and why is it part of the circuit?
Srikalahasti, the Vayu (air) sthalam, is in Tirupati district of Andhra Pradesh, not Tamil Nadu, though it is always counted in the Pancha Bhoota circuit. A lamp in the sanctum is said to flicker though there is no draught, a sign of the air element. The temple is also well known for the Rahu-Ketu puja. It is about 40 km from Tirupati, and the nearest airport is Tirupati (Renigunta).
What should you know about Rameswaram Jyotirlinga?
The Ramanathaswamy temple on Rameswaram island is the only Jyotirlinga in Tamil Nadu and one of the Char Dham of Adi Shankaracharya. Tradition holds that Shri Ram worshipped Shiva here, in a linga made of sand by Mata Sita, before returning to Ayodhya. A second linga, the Vishwalingam brought by Hanuman, is worshipped first by custom.
Yatris usually take a holy dip in the sea at Agni Theertham, then bathe at the 22 theerthams (wells) inside the temple before darshan. The temple’s corridors, with roughly 1,200 metres of pillared passages, are among the longest of any Hindu temple. The temple is usually open from about 5 am to 1 pm and 3 pm to 9 pm, and the spatika (crystal) linga darshan is held in the first hour after opening.
How to reach: Madurai airport is about 170 km away (three and a half to four hours by road). The new vertical-lift Pamban rail bridge, about 2 km long, opened in April 2025 and restored direct trains to Rameswaram. Our Rameshwaram Jyotirlinga guide and guide to temples in Rameswaram cover Dhanushkodi and the theertham snan in detail.
Why is Brihadeeswarar temple in Thanjavur famous?
The Brihadeeswarar (Peruvudaiyar) temple was built by the Chola king Rajaraja Chola I and completed in 1010 CE. Its granite vimana, about 66 metres high, towers over the sanctum, and a huge monolithic Nandi faces the Shivalinga, one of the largest in India. With Gangaikonda Cholapuram and the Airavatesvara temple at Darasuram, it forms the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Great Living Chola Temples, and daily worship has continued here for over a thousand years.
How to reach: Thanjavur is about 55 km from Tiruchirappalli and about 40 km from Kumbakonam, and has a railway station. Evening light on the vimana is beautiful, and the temple is far less crowded than Madurai or Rameswaram.
Is Madurai Meenakshi temple also a Shiva temple?
Yes. The temple is dedicated to both Goddess Meenakshi and Shiva as Sundareswarar, her consort. Devotees traditionally take darshan of Meenakshi first and then Sundareswarar. Each night, in the palliyarai ceremony, Sundareswarar is carried in a palanquin to Meenakshi’s chamber, a beautiful ritual to attend if timing allows.
The Chithirai Thiruvizha in April to May, with the celestial wedding (Thirukalyanam) of Meenakshi and Sundareswarar, is the biggest festival. Security is strict, and mobile phones are not allowed inside; lockers are available outside. Madurai has an airport and a major railway junction, and is the natural base for Rameswaram.
Which Shiva temples should you see in Kumbakonam?
Kumbakonam, on the Kaveri delta, is a temple town where great Shiva and Vishnu temples stand within a few streets of each other.
- Adi Kumbeswarar: The main Shiva temple, linked to the legend of the pot (kumbha) of amrit that gave the town its name.
- Mahamaham tank: A sacred tank ringed by small shrines. The Mahamaham festival is held about once in 12 years; the last was in 2016 and the next is planned for 2028, according to the Tamil Nadu government. Masi Magam is celebrated here every year.
- Nageswaran and Kasi Viswanathar: Old Chola-era temples in the town.
- Airavatesvara, Darasuram: A UNESCO-listed Chola temple a few kilometres away, with exquisite carving.
- Navagraha temples: Several of the nine planetary temples around Kumbakonam are Shiva temples, such as Thirunageswaram (Rahu), Alangudi (Guru) and Vaitheeswaran Koil (Angaraka).
- Thirukadaiyur: The Amritaghateswarar–Abhirami temple, where many families hold the 60th and 80th birthday (Shashtiabdapoorthi and Sathabhishekam) ceremonies.
What are the timings and dress rules for Tamil Nadu temples?
Most large temples open early, around 5 to 6 am, close for a few hours from about 12:30 or 1 pm, and reopen from around 3:30 to 5 pm until about 8:30 to 10 pm. Chidambaram keeps its own schedule with a long afternoon break. Timings change on festival days, eclipses and special pujas, so check with the temple or the Tamil Nadu HR&CE department’s temple websites before planning.
- Wear traditional or modest clothes: dhoti or kurta-pyjama for men, saree, salwar kameez or long skirt for women. Shorts and sleeveless tops are refused at many temples.
- Footwear is left outside; carry socks for hot stone floors in summer.
- Some temples, including Meenakshi, restrict mobile phones.
- At some temples, entry to the inner sanctum is restricted to Hindus.

Frequently asked questions
Which is the most famous Shiva temple in Tamil Nadu?
Ramanathaswamy in Rameswaram is the most important for pilgrims, as it is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas and one of the Char Dham. Brihadeeswarar in Thanjavur is the most famous for its Chola architecture, and Chidambaram Nataraja and Arunachaleswarar in Thiruvannamalai are among the most revered of the Pancha Bhoota Sthalams.
Which Pancha Bhoota Sthalam is not in Tamil Nadu?

About six days by road from Chennai covers all five temples at a comfortable pace, with Tirupati Balaji on the way. Families short of time can do the four Tamil Nadu temples in four to five days. Adding Thanjavur, Madurai and Rameswaram makes a seven to nine day Shiva yatra.
How long is Girivalam at Thiruvannamalai?
The Girivalam path around Arunachala hill is about 14 km. Most devotees walk it barefoot and clockwise in four to five hours, stopping at the eight Ashta Lingams. Full-moon nights draw lakhs of people, so seniors may prefer a weekday morning. Carry water and take rest breaks along the way.
When is Karthigai Deepam in 2026?
Panchangs give Karthigai Deepam on Tuesday, 24 November 2026. On this evening the Maha Deepam is lit on top of Arunachala hill at Thiruvannamalai, after a ten-day festival at the temple. The temple announces the exact Maha Deepam day, and the town is extremely crowded, so book stays well in advance.
Is Rameswaram connected by train again?
Yes. The new Pamban rail bridge, India’s first vertical-lift sea bridge and about 2 km long, opened on 6 April 2025 and restored direct trains to Rameswaram. The island is also linked by road bridge. Madurai, about 170 km away, has the nearest airport.
Can we visit Chidambaram and Thanjavur on the same day?
It is possible but tiring. Chidambaram to Kumbakonam is about 75 km and Kumbakonam to Thanjavur about 40 km, so a long day could cover both with a halt at Kumbakonam. For senior citizens, it is better to stay a night in Kumbakonam and visit Thanjavur the next morning or evening.
