Highlights & Route

Two very different seats of the Goddess anchor this six-day yatra. High in the Jaintia Hills of Meghalaya, the Nartiang Durga temple is the Jayanti Shakti Peeth, where the left thigh of Sati is believed to have fallen. It was built some 600 years ago when the Jaintia king Jaso Manik embraced Shakti worship, and the village around it is scattered with one of the largest groups of standing monoliths in the world. Down on the plains of Assam, Kamakhya on Nilachal Hill is the most revered Shakti Peeth of all, where the Goddess is worshipped as a natural stone fissure in a cave.

Between the two we give you the pleasures of Shillong: the lakes, waterfalls and pine-covered hills of the Scotland of the East, the Don Bosco museum of North-East cultures, and the grand sweep of Umiam Lake on the drive back to Guwahati. The Guwahati day covers the full temple circuit of the city, from Kamakhya and Bhuvaneshwari on the hill to Umananda on its river island, Navagraha, Ugratara, Shukreswar, Bhimeswar Dham and the Basistha ashram.

You travel in a private air-conditioned vehicle throughout, with three nights in Shillong and two in Guwahati, vegetarian breakfast and dinner, and our Dehradun coordinator on call. Guwahati airport has direct flights from Delhi, so from Dehradun you can be in the hills the same evening.

Good to know before you book

Shillong is about 100 km and 3 hours from Guwahati by the NH6 four-lane road; Nartiang is a further 60–65 km east on the Jowai road, roughly 2 hours each way on hill roads.
At Nartiang the Durga image for the annual puja is a plantain trunk rather than an idol, following Khasi-Jaintia custom, and the temple is cared for by Pnar (Jaintia) priests; dress modestly and ask before photographing inside.
Kamakhya darshan can take several hours in the general queue; we start before dawn and advise on the paid quick-darshan line. The sanctum is closed for three days each June during Ambubachi (22–26 June in 2026; 2027 dates to be announced).
Meghalaya is one of the wettest places on earth; June to September brings very heavy rain and mist. October to April is clear and cool, with cold nights in Shillong from December to February.
Sweet Falls and Laitlum are viewpoints on exposed cliffs with no railings in places; we skip them in bad weather.
Phones and cameras are not allowed inside Kamakhya’s main temple; lockers are available near the gate.

Day 1 :

Guwahati to Shillong

Our representative meets you at your arrival point (airport, railway station or hotel) at the agreed time at Guwahati airport or railway station. We drive straight into the Khasi Hills on NH6, climbing past Nongpoh with a tea stop and a first view of Umiam Lake, and reach Shillong by evening (about 100 km, 3 hours). Check in and rest; if time permits, a short stroll around Ward Lake or Police Bazar. Dinner at the hotel.

Day 2 :

Nartiang: Jayanti Shakti Peeth and the monoliths

After breakfast we drive east towards Jowai through pine forest and open Jaintia grasslands, turning off to Nartiang village (about 60–65 km, 2 hours). We first have darshan at the Durga temple, where the priest will tell you how the Goddess came to the Jaintia kings, and visit the small Shiva temple nearby with its old cannon remains. We then walk through the monolith garden, a field of hundreds of upright stones and flat table-stones raised by Jaintia chiefs over centuries, the tallest about eight metres high. Simple lunch (own cost) in Nartiang or Jowai, then return to Shillong by evening. Dinner at the hotel.

Day 3 :

Shillong local darshan

A relaxed day in and around Shillong. After breakfast we drive to Laitlum Canyons on the eastern edge of the plateau for a view over the deep valleys when the clouds lift, then return to the Don Bosco Centre for Indigenous Cultures, a seven-floor museum of the tribes of the North-East with a skywalk on the roof. After lunch (own cost) we visit the Cathedral of Mary Help of Christians at Laitumkhrah, Ward Lake and its gardens, and Sweet Falls if weather allows. Evening free for Police Bazar, where Khasi shawls, cane work and local honey make good gifts. Dinner at the hotel.

Day 4 :

Shillong to Guwahati via Umiam Lake

After breakfast and check-out we drive down to Umiam Lake (Barapani), the great reservoir ringed by pine hills, where you can stop for photographs and an optional boat ride. We continue to Guwahati and check in by early afternoon. In the evening we take you to the Brahmaputra riverfront for sunset, with an optional river cruise at your own cost, and our coordinator confirms the pre-dawn start for Kamakhya. Dinner at the hotel.

Day 5 :

Kamakhya and the temples of Guwahati

We leave before dawn with a packed breakfast for Nilachal Hill. After depositing phones and footwear you join the darshan line at Kamakhya; the final descent into the cave sanctum is by a few steep stone steps, and our coordinator stays close to assist. After darshan we visit the Bagala and Bhuvaneshwari temples on the hill, the latter at the summit with a wide view of the Brahmaputra. Back in the city we take the short ferry to Umananda on Peacock Island, then visit Navagraha on Chitrachal Hill, Sri Sri Ugratara Devalaya in Uzan Bazar, Shukreswar on the riverbank, the Bhimeswar Dham and the Basistha ashram at the city's southern edge. Lunch (own cost) in town. Dinner at the hotel.

Overnight: Guwahati

Day 6 :

Departure from Guwahati

Breakfast and check-out. If your flight is later we can stop at the Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra or a silk emporium for Muga and Pat weaves. Drop at your departure point (airport, railway station or hotel) at Guwahati airport or railway station.

Which Shakti Peeths are covered?

Two: the Nartiang Durga temple in the West Jaintia Hills, known as the Jayanti Shakti Peeth where Sati’s left thigh fell, and Kamakhya on Nilachal Hill in Guwahati, where the yoni of Sati is believed to have fallen and which is regarded as the greatest of all the Peeths.

What is special about the Nartiang temple?

It was built about 600 years ago after the Jaintia king Jaso Manik, influenced by his Koch queen, took up Shakti worship, and Nartiang was the summer capital of the kingdom. Following Khasi-Jaintia custom, the goddess at Durga Puja is represented by a decorated plantain trunk rather than an idol, and a gun salute is still given to her. The village is also famous for its field of ancient monoliths.

How long is the Kamakhya darshan?

On a normal weekday with a pre-dawn start, one to two hours. On weekends, Navratri and other festivals the free line can take four hours or more; a paid quick-darshan ticket is usually available and our coordinator advises on the day.

Do we need any permit to visit Meghalaya?

No. Indian citizens need no Inner Line Permit for Meghalaya or Assam. Foreign nationals should carry their passport and visa; no special permit is needed for the areas on this yatra.

What is the best time of year?

October to April. Autumn after the rains is lush and clear, and winter is cold but sunny. June to September is extremely wet. Durga Puja (around October) is a wonderful time at both Nartiang and Guwahati but hotels fill early.

Can we add Cherrapunji or Dawki?

Yes. Cherrapunji’s living root bridges and waterfalls, Mawlynnong village and the crystal-clear Umngot river at Dawki each need a day. We can add one or two days in Shillong for them; ask us for a combined price.

Is this yatra suitable for elderly yatris?

Yes, with a few cautions. Hill drives are long but comfortable, and most sites are at road level. The Kamakhya queue and cave steps are the hardest part; we can arrange the quicker line and extra help. Shillong’s cold in winter needs warm clothing.

How long is the drive to Nartiang from Shillong?

About 60 to 65 km, roughly two hours each way on hill roads towards Jowai. We go on Day 2 after breakfast and return to Shillong the same evening, so it is a full but unhurried day. At Nartiang we first have darshan at the Durga temple, then see the monoliths; monolith park entry is paid by you. Dress modestly and ask before taking photographs inside.
