Highlights & Route
Bengal holds more of the fifty-one Shakti Peeths than any other region of India, and most of them lie in a loose cluster across the districts of Purba Bardhaman, Birbhum and Murshidabad, in red-earth country of paddy fields, mango groves and small market towns. Few outsiders visit them, which is part of their charm: these are village shrines where the Goddess is worshipped much as she has been for centuries, without queues or VIP lines. This four-day circuit from Durgapur links nine of them.
We begin at Ketugram and its neighbours Ujani (Mangal Chandi) and Attahas (Phullara), stay the first night at Katwa, then go north to Kiriteswari near the old nawabi capital of Murshidabad, with Nandikeshwari at Sainthia on the way. The third day crosses Birbhum: Kankalitala near Santiniketan, Nalateshwari at Nalhati and the hot springs and temple of Bakreshwar, before a final morning at Jogadya Devi, Khirgram, and the return to Durgapur.
Roads in this part of Bengal are mostly two-lane district roads, so distances that look short on a map take time; we have kept each day’s driving to four or five hours, broken by the temple halts. Hotels are modest small-town properties, chosen for cleanliness rather than luxury. The yatra suits devotees who want to complete the Bengal Shakti Peeths, and families who enjoy quiet countryside.

Good to know before you book
- Durgapur is reached by train on the Howrah–Delhi main line or by flights to Kazi Nazrul Islam Airport at Andal, about 25 km from the city.
- District roads are narrow and shared with cycles and tractors; average speeds are 35–40 km/h, so the day’s distances take longer than expected.
- Hotels at Katwa and in Birbhum are simple; Murshidabad (Lalbagh/Berhampore) has better options.
- Many of these temples hold their biggest fairs at Makar Sankranti, Shivaratri and during Durga Puja and Kali Puja, when roads around them are closed to vehicles for the day.
- Bakreshwar’s hot springs feed several bathing kunds of differing temperature; carry a towel and a change of clothes if you wish to bathe.
- Vegetarian food is available at all stops, but choices are limited in the villages; we carry dry snacks and arrange thali lunches at known eateries.

- Kiriteswari, the oldest surviving temple in Murshidabad district
