Highlights & Route
Odisha packs a remarkable amount of sacred India into a small triangle. Bhubaneswar, the old temple city, has hundreds of medieval shrines of which Lingaraj is the greatest. Puri on the coast is the seat of Lord Jagannath and one of the four Char Dhams of the Vaishnava tradition. Between them stands the thirteenth-century Sun Temple at Konark, carved as a chariot of the Sun God and now a World Heritage Site. This yatra takes in all three unhurriedly, and adds a day on Chilika, Asia’s largest brackish lagoon, where the Kalijai island temple rises from the water.
You arrive in Bhubaneswar and spend the first night there, seeing Lingaraj, the Mukteshwar and Rajarani temples and the Jain caves of Udayagiri and Khandagiri. The second day goes to Konark and the Chandrabhaga beach before reaching Puri, where you stay three nights. That gives you an unhurried Jagannath darshan, the Gundicha and Loknath temples, and a full day for Chilika from Satapada. The last night is back in Bhubaneswar after a stop at the Dhauli peace stupa.
This is an easy yatra on good roads with short drives, suitable for elderly yatris and children. Please be aware that the Jagannath temple and the Lingaraj temple admit Hindus only; non-Hindu members of a family can view both from raised platforms outside, and we plan the day so that nobody is left waiting without something to see.

Good to know before you book
- The Jagannath temple at Puri and the Lingaraj temple at Bhubaneswar admit Hindus only; others may view from the platform of the Raghunandan library opposite Jagannath, and from a platform beside Lingaraj.
- Mobile phones, cameras and leather items are not allowed inside the Jagannath temple and must be deposited outside.
- Konark is an Archaeological Survey of India monument with an entry ticket for everyone; the sanctum is sealed and the temple is viewed from outside.
- The Chilika boat ride from Satapada is a shared or private motor launch of two to three hours; Irrawaddy dolphins are often seen but never guaranteed.
- Puri is at its most crowded during Rath Yatra (June–July) and Kartik Purnima; book months ahead for those dates.
- Maha Prasad from the Ananda Bazaar inside the Jagannath temple is a highlight; it is eaten sitting together, regardless of caste or rank.
