Highlights & Route

Most Odisha tours stop at Puri. This one goes further, down the coast to Gopalpur-on-Sea and into the hills of Gajapati district, where the Tibetan settlement at Chandragiri (Jirang) keeps one of the largest Buddhist monasteries in eastern India, and where the sulphur springs of Taptapani have been bathed in for centuries. Then it swings back north to the Biraja Shakti Peeth at Jajpur before finishing at Lingaraj. The result is a six-day loop that touches Shaiva, Vaishnava, Shakta and Buddhist Odisha in one journey.

The first night is in Bhubaneswar with its early medieval temples. Two nights at Puri give you an unhurried Jagannath darshan, Konark and the craft villages of Pipili and Raghurajpur. From Puri we travel about 170 km south to Gopalpur for a quiet seaside night, using the next morning for Chandragiri and Taptapani before the long drive north to Jajpur and Bhubaneswar. The final morning is for Lingaraj.

The itinerary is comfortable except for Day 5, which is a long driving day of around seven hours including the Jajpur darshan; we start early and keep the Biraja visit to the essentials. Elderly travellers manage it well with a good night’s rest at Gopalpur beforehand. As on all Odisha tours, the Jagannath and Lingaraj temples are open to Hindus only.

Good to know before you book

  • The Jagannath temple at Puri and the Lingaraj temple at Bhubaneswar admit Hindus only; others view from platforms outside.
  • Day 5 (Gopalpur to Bhubaneswar via Jajpur) is the longest at roughly 350 km; we leave by 7 am and break the journey with tea and lunch halts.
  • The Padmasambhava Mahavihara at Chandragiri is a working monastery; visitors should dress modestly and keep voices low in the prayer hall.
  • Taptapani’s hot springs are channelled into a bathing pond; carry a change of clothes if you intend to bathe.
  • Konark is an ASI monument with a ticket for all visitors; Raghurajpur is a living artists’ village where you may be invited into homes to see pattachitra painting.
  • Festival peaks at Puri are Rath Yatra (June–July) and Kartik Purnima; Gopalpur is busiest at Christmas and New Year.
