Highlights & Route
Pashupatinath on the bank of the Bagmati is one of the most revered Shiva temples anywhere, and for many families in north India it is closer than they think. Nepalgunj sits just across the border from Rupaidiha in Bahraich district of Uttar Pradesh, a day’s drive from Lucknow, Bareilly or the Kumaon towns. From there a short domestic flight puts you in Kathmandu within the hour. This two-day programme is built around that convenience: reach Nepalgunj on your own, and we take care of everything from the flight onward.
Day one gives you Budhanilkantha, where a five-metre image of Vishnu reclining on the serpent Ananta floats in a tank, and the great white stupa of Boudhanath, the largest in Nepal and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Day two begins before dawn at Pashupatinath itself. Indian nationals enter the main courtyard free of charge and can take darshan of the four-faced lingam in the sanctum, offer abhishek through the temple priests, and watch the cremation ghats and sadhus along the river.
The pace is gentle. There is no trekking and little walking, so grandparents and small children manage comfortably. Because Indians need no visa for Nepal, the paperwork is minimal: a passport or Voter ID card is all an adult has to carry. The yatra ends with a drop at Kathmandu airport, from where you can fly home or extend your stay with us for Muktinath, Pokhara or Janakpur.
Route
Nepalgunj (fly) → Kathmandu → Budhanilkantha → Boudhanath → Kathmandu (night) → Pashupatinath → Kathmandu airport
Good to know before you book
- Indian citizens do not need a visa for Nepal. Adults should carry a valid passport or an Election Commission Voter ID; children under 15 and seniors over 65 may use Aadhaar with another photo proof.
- Only Hindus are permitted inside the inner courtyard of Pashupatinath; entry for Indian nationals is free, while other foreign visitors pay a fee.
- Indian notes of Rs 100, Rs 200 and Rs 500 are permitted in Nepal up to Rs 25,000 per person (Nepal Rastra Bank, July 2026). Carry Indian notes within that limit or change money into Nepali rupees on arrival.
- Nepalgunj to Kathmandu is a 50-55 minute flight on a small aircraft; baggage limits are usually 15-20 kg, and morning flights can be delayed by weather.
- The best months are October to April; monsoon rains from June to September often disrupt domestic flights.
- Dress modestly for the temples, and keep shoulders and knees covered; leather belts and bags are not allowed inside Pashupatinath.
