Highlights & Route
This is the closest most of us will ever come to Sagarmatha. A chartered helicopter leaves Kathmandu soon after dawn, refuels at Lukla, and flies up the Khumbu valley past Namche and Tengboche to the Everest Base Camp area. It touches down for a few minutes at Kala Patthar, a rocky shoulder above Gorak Shep at about 5,500 m, where Everest, Nuptse and Pumori stand directly in front of you. On the way back it lands at Syangboche for breakfast on the terrace of Hotel Everest View, with Ama Dablam across the valley.
The half-day flight is wrapped in a two-night Kathmandu stay. The first evening is kept for Budhanilkantha and the Sandhya Aarti at Pashupatinath on the Bagmati, so that the yatra begins with darshan. The second day is the helicopter; the third morning is an unhurried checkout and airport transfer.
Helicopters fly in small groups of up to five passengers with strict weight limits, so this works best for a family or close friends booking together. No trekking or acclimatisation is needed, but the Kala Patthar stop is at very high altitude, which is why it is kept to ten minutes or so and why oxygen is carried on board.
Route
Kathmandu airport → Hotel → Budhanilkantha → Pashupatinath (aarti) → Kathmandu → Lukla (refuel) → Kala Patthar landing → Syangboche / Hotel Everest View (breakfast) → Lukla → Kathmandu → Kathmandu airport
Good to know before you book
- Price on request and quoted for the group, since the helicopter is a charter; it varies with passenger count and total weight.
- Total helicopter time door to door is about 4 to 5 hours, with a 5.30 am hotel departure.
- Each passenger’s weight is taken at check-in. At the high landing the helicopter can lift only about 300 kg, so larger groups are shuttled from Pheriche or Lukla to Kala Patthar in turns.
- The Kala Patthar landing lasts about 10 minutes and depends on weather and air traffic; it is a plan, not a promise.
- Best months are October–November and March–May; mornings in December–February are usually clear but cold.
- Passport or voter ID for adults; the helicopter company copies it for the flight manifest.
Darshan, puja and timing notes
The darshan on this programme happens in Kathmandu, so its timing matters as much as the flight. The Pashupatinath area is open roughly from 4 am to 9 pm. The inner gates close around 2 pm and reopen in the evening (about 6 pm in winter, 7 pm in other seasons), which is why our Day 1 visit is timed for the late afternoon and the Sandhya Aarti on the Bagmati. Indian and Nepali citizens enter free; the main sanctum is open to Hindus only. Leather items are best left in the vehicle.
- Best time of day for the flight: the first departure, around 6 am, has the clearest air. Winds and cloud in the Khumbu usually build by late morning, which is why we never shift the flight to the afternoon.
- Landing rules: helicopter landings at Kala Patthar (about 5,545 m) have been restricted and reopened more than once since 2023 by Nepal’s aviation authority and local bodies. In 2026 they were reported to have resumed with small-load shuttles from Pheriche. If a landing is not permitted on your date, the flight still covers the valley and the Syangboche breakfast stop; we explain this before you pay.
- Festivals: Maha Shivaratri (early March 2027) brings lakhs of devotees and sadhus to Pashupatinath; darshan takes hours and roads close. Teej (August–September) is also crowded with women devotees. Plan the Kathmandu evenings accordingly.
Is this yatra right for you?
No walking is needed, but you are taken from 1,400 m to above 5,500 m within about an hour. That is the real test. The short stop is safe for most healthy adults, including fit seniors, but this flight is not advised for anyone with heart or lung disease, uncontrolled blood pressure, recent surgery or pregnancy, or for infants. Ask your own doctor before booking.
Budget is the second filter. A charter is priced for the whole helicopter, so it suits a family of four or five travelling together. If the altitude or the cost does not suit you, choose our Mount Everest mountain flight: a pressurised aircraft flies along the range for about an hour with every passenger at a window, and no one leaves their seat. Families who want Kathmandu’s temples at a slower pace can take our Kathmandu Valley Darshan Yatra, which already includes the mountain flight.
