Highlights & Route
The mountain flight is the simplest way for a yatri of any age to see Everest. A small turboprop leaves Kathmandu’s domestic terminal at first light, flies east parallel to the great range at a safe distance, turns near Everest and comes back the same way. The whole flight lasts about an hour, and from your window you pass Langtang Lirung, Gauri Shankar, Cho Oyu, Pumori, Nuptse, Everest, Lhotse, Makalu and Ama Dablam, with the pilot naming each peak over the speaker.
Aircraft on this route carry a single row of seats on each side of the aisle, so there are no middle seats and nobody has to lean across a neighbour. Passengers are also invited forward to the cockpit one at a time for the straight-ahead view, and the airline hands out a certificate afterwards. For many Shiva devotees this flight is a darshan in itself: Gauri Shankar, named for Parvati and Shiva, is one of the clearest peaks on the route.
We handle the pickup from your Kathmandu hotel before dawn, check-in formalities and the transfer afterwards, either back to the hotel or straight to the international terminal if you are flying out the same morning. The flight is a good first morning for anyone joining our Muktinath or Kathmandu Valley programmes.
Route
Kathmandu hotel → Domestic terminal → Mountain flight east along the Himalaya to Everest and back → Kathmandu hotel or international terminal
Good to know before you book
- Price on request; Indian nationals are charged the airline’s SAARC fare in Nepali rupees, which is lower than the foreigner fare.
- The first departure is around 6.15 am, the clearest time of day. Expect to leave the hotel by 5.30 am.
- Flights operate only when the range is visible. If the airline cancels before take-off you receive a full refund or a free re-schedule; if cloud spoils the view after take-off, refunds are not automatic.
- October–November and March–May are the most reliable months; monsoon (June–September) brings frequent cancellations.
- No altitude effect: the aircraft is pressurised and does not land anywhere.
- Carry your passport or voter ID; it is checked at the domestic terminal.
Darshan, puja and timing notes
Mountain flights leave Kathmandu’s domestic terminal from about 6.15 am, when the air over the range is clearest, and last about 50 minutes to an hour. Airlines on this route use small turboprops (for example 36-seat and 24-seat ATR aircraft) laid out so that every passenger has a window. Expect to report about 45 minutes before departure.
- Peaks named on the way: Langtang Lirung, Gauri Shankar, Cho Oyu, Shishapangma, Everest, Lhotse, Makalu and others; the crew hands out a peak map.
- A darshan, not a landing: many yatris treat Gauri Shankar, the twin summit named for Parvati and Shiva, as the darshan of the flight. Chant quietly as the crew calls it out.
- Pairing with Pashupatinath: land by about 7.30 am, have breakfast, and you can be at Pashupatinath for morning darshan by 9 am. The temple is about 2 km from the airport.
- Best months: October–November and March–May. Winter mornings are clear but cold; monsoon (June–September) sees frequent cancellations.
Is this yatra right for you?
This is the easiest way to see Everest: no trek, no altitude on the ground and no fitness test. Grandparents, small children and wheelchair users (with prior airline notice) can all take the flight. You only need to manage a pre-dawn start and short walks inside the terminal.
It is not right if you want to stand in the Everest region. For that, the Everest helicopter morning lands at Kala Patthar and stops for breakfast near Syangboche, but it means a short stay at very high altitude and a higher, group-quoted price. Those prone to motion sickness should take a tablet before boarding. If your only free morning is the day of your international flight, keep at least three hours between landing and check-in. To plan the morning, use the enquiry form on this page or call/WhatsApp us (numbers on our Contact page).

Getting there
Book your Kathmandu hotel for the night before. Carry your original passport or voter ID; it is checked at the domestic terminal. If the airline cancels for weather it normally offers the next morning or a refund under its own rules, so keep one spare morning in Kathmandu if you can.
