Highlights & Route

Many yatris pass through Kathmandu on the way to Muktinath, Kailash or a Nepal holiday with only a night to spare. This short programme makes that night count. We meet you at Tribhuvan airport, settle you into the hotel and use the first afternoon for Budhanilkantha, where a five-metre Vishnu reclines on a bed of serpents in a water tank, and Boudhanath, the largest stupa in Nepal.

The second morning is given to Pashupatinath. The temple of Lord Pashupati on the Bagmati is the most sacred Shiva shrine in Nepal and one of the Jyotirlinga-equivalent kshetras for Nepali Hindus; the main sanctum is open to Hindus only, and Indian nationals enter without any ticket. We time the visit for the morning darshan, when the inner gates are open, before dropping you at the airport.

Everything is by private vehicle with a driver who knows the lanes, so the plan works equally well for a couple, a family with grandparents or a small group. If you have a later flight on Day 2 we can add Swayambhunath or Patan Durbar Square to the morning.

Route

Kathmandu airport → Hotel → Budhanilkantha → Boudhanath → Hotel → Pashupatinath → Kathmandu airport

Good to know before you book

  • Price on request, per person on twin-sharing; a single traveller pays a supplement.
  • Pashupatinath’s inner gates open from 4 am, close around 2 pm and reopen for the evening aarti; the morning slot is the reliable one for darshan.
  • Indian and Nepali nationals pay nothing at Pashupatinath; Boudhanath charges a small SAARC entry fee at the gate, paid directly.
  • Leather belts, bags and shoes are not allowed inside the Pashupatinath complex, so dress accordingly.
  • Carry passport or voter ID; airlines will not board you for Nepal on Aadhaar unless you are under 15 or over 65.

Darshan, puja and timing notes

Pashupatinath opens for darshan before dawn, at about 4 am, and the main morning puja runs until around noon. In the afternoon the doors are partly closed, and the temple reopens for the evening puja; closing time moves with the season, roughly 6.30 pm in winter and 8 pm in summer. On big days such as Teej and Shivaratri all four doors of the main shrine are opened from about 3 am.

  • What you see: the four-faced (Chaturmukha) linga is seen from the doorways of the sanctum; devotees do not enter the garbhagriha. Each of the four doors shows a different face.
  • Who can enter: the main temple courtyard is for Hindus. Indian and Nepali citizens pay no entry fee.
  • Rudrabhishek and puja: priests at the temple can perform a Rudrabhishek in the morning; dakshina is agreed directly. Tell us at booking so the slot fits your flight.
  • Bagmati aarti: an evening aarti is held at the ghats on the Bagmati below the temple. If your flight lands early on Day 1 we can reorder the afternoon to include it.
  • Leather: belts, bags and wallets of leather are not allowed inside.

Festivals to plan around: Maha Shivaratri (6 March 2027) brings lakhs of devotees and sadhus; queues can run for hours. Mondays in Shrawan (July–August) and Haritalika Teej (early September) are also very crowded. October–November and February–April are the pleasant months.

Is this yatra right for you?

This is a two-day darshan built around one night in Kathmandu. Walking is moderate: stone steps and courtyards at Pashupatinath and a flat circuit at Boudhanath. Senior citizens and children manage it well; the city is at about 1,400 m, which causes no altitude trouble. It suits yatris in transit, those adding a night before Muktinath or Kailash, and families who want Pashupatinath without a long Nepal holiday.

It is too short if you want Swayambhunath, Patan, Bhaktapur and Pashupatinath unhurried, or Muktinath as well. For that, look at the longer options below. To fit the plan around your flight times, use the enquiry form on this page or call/WhatsApp us (numbers on our Contact page).

Indian citizens need no visa but must carry a passport or voter ID (Aadhaar only for those under 15 or over 65).
