Highlights & Route
This is the full Nepal pilgrimage for a family that wants both great shrines, Pashupatinath and Muktinath, without rushing either. Two nights in Kathmandu open the yatra with Budhanilkantha, Pashupatinath, Boudhanath, Patan and Swayambhunath. A road day along the Trishuli river takes in Manakamana Devi by cable car before reaching Pokhara, and from there the mountain section begins.
Muktinath, at about 3,700 m in the Mustang district, is reached by a 20-minute flight from Pokhara to Jomsom and a shared jeep up the Kali Gandaki valley. Pilgrims bathe under the 108 spouts and in the two kundas, take darshan of Lord Muktinath, and visit the Jwala Mai shrine with its natural flame. The return drive passes the apple orchards of Marpha and the medieval village of Kagbeni, where many families perform pind daan for their ancestors on the river bank.
Back in Pokhara there is a full day for Bindhyabasini, Devi’s Fall, the Gupteshwor cave and the boat to Tal Barahi, and the last morning climbs to the 51-foot Pumdikot Shiva before the flight to Kathmandu. Hotels are tourist-class with vegetarian breakfast and dinner, and the pace suits parents and grandparents.
