Highlights & Route

North Bihar is Mithila, the kingdom of King Janak and the birthplace of Sita. The Ramayana sites here are quieter than Ayodhya and far less visited, which is part of their appeal. Village temples, old tanks, a banyan tree under which the wedding party is said to have rested: the stories are kept alive by local people rather than by crowds. This six-day visit threads those places together from Patna, with comfortable hotel nights in Patna, Darbhanga and Sitamarhi.

You begin in Patna with a day among its best-known shrines, including the Mahavir Mandir near the railway station and Takht Sri Patna Sahib, the birthplace of Guru Gobind Singh. From there the route turns north to Darbhanga, the old seat of Mithila’s maharajas, and to Ahilya Sthan in the village of Ahiyari, where Ahalya is believed to have been freed from her curse by the touch of Shri Ram’s feet. The last stop is Sitamarhi, with the Janaki temple in town and Punaura Dham a few kilometres away, the spot where tradition says Sita was found in a furrow.

Distances between stops are short, two to four hours, so there is no exhausting drive on any day. We keep the mornings for temples and the afternoons easy, and our team arranges local purohits for anyone who wishes to offer puja. The yatra is a good fit for Mithila families visiting their roots, for senior citizens, and for anyone who has already done Ayodhya and wants the other half of the story.

Route

Patna (2 nights) → Darbhanga (2 nights, with Ahilya Sthan) → Sitamarhi (1 night, with Punaura Dham, Janaki Mandir, Haleshwar Sthan and Panth Pakar) → Patna airport or railway station

Good to know before you book

  • Patna’s Jay Prakash Narayan airport and Patna Junction are the arrival points. Darbhanga also has a small airport, which can be used for departure if you prefer to reverse the route.
  • Hotels in Darbhanga and Sitamarhi are simple compared to big cities; clean, air-conditioned rooms are available but do not expect luxury.
  • Rural roads in north Bihar can be slow; we keep the daily driving short and start after breakfast.
  • Vivah Panchami (November or December), celebrated as the wedding anniversary of Ram and Sita, and Sita Navami or Janaki Navami (April or May) are the main festivals at Sitamarhi, with large melas.
  • Monsoon (July to September) brings flooding in parts of north Bihar; October to March is the best time for this route.
