Nageshwar Jyotirlinga: Timings, Dress, How to Reach Dwarka

Quick answer: Nageshwar Jyotirlinga is about 17 km from Dwarka in Gujarat, on the road to Okha and Bet Dwarka. Darshan is generally from about 6 am to 9 pm and is free, with no online booking. Men may be asked to wear a dhoti for abhishek in the sanctum. Most yatris see it in an hour on a Dwarka day, so plan two nights in Dwarka.

Updated for the 2027 yatra season (facts checked October 2026)

Nageshwar is the Jyotirlinga of the serpent lord, worshipped as protector from all poisons, real and inner. It lies in the flat coastal land of Devbhumi Dwarka district, and its huge seated Shiva can be seen from far across the fields. Because it sits between Dwarkadhish and Bet Dwarka, one well-planned day gives you a Jyotirlinga, a Char Dham and Shri Krishna’s island home. This guide covers the legend, timings, dress, how to reach, the other temples that claim the name, and how to pair Nageshwar with Somnath.

What is the legend of Nageshwar Jyotirlinga?

According to the Shiva Purana, a demon named Daruka and his wife Daruki ruled the Darukavana forest by the western sea and tormented travellers. Among their prisoners was a merchant named Supriya, a devoted Shiva bhakt, who kept chanting “Om Namah Shivaya” in captivity and taught the other prisoners to do the same. When Daruka tried to kill him, Bhagwan Shiva appeared, destroyed the demons and freed the captives. At the devotees’ request Shiva stayed on as Nageshwar, the Lord of serpents.

The stotram says “Nagesham Darukavane”. The exact location of the scriptural Darukavana cannot be proved today, which is why three temples claim the title (see below). Devotees believe that worship here removes the fear of snakebite and poison, and many perform Rudrabhishek for relief from sarp dosh.

Dress code and temple rules

  • Men may be asked to wear a dhoti to go close to the linga for abhishek; the temple can provide one if needed. For general darshan, modest clothing is enough.
  • Avoid shorts and casual beachwear, even though you are near the coast.
  • The sanctum is a small, sunken chamber reached by a few steps down. On busy days the priests keep the line moving.
  • Photography is not allowed inside the sanctum. Gujarat is a dry state and Dwarka is a vegetarian pilgrim town.

Which is the real Nageshwar Jyotirlinga?

Three temples are honoured as Nageshwar, and it helps to know this before you plan:

TempleLocationWhy devotees honour it
Nageshwar, near DwarkaDevbhumi Dwarka, GujaratDarukavana is placed by the western sea; most widely visited, fits with Dwarka Char Dham
Aundha NagnathHingoli district, MaharashtraRecognised as the Jyotirlinga by the Maharashtra tradition; an ancient Hemadpanti-style temple
JageshwarNear Almora, UttarakhandReads “Darukavana” as the deodar (daru) forests of Kumaon; a group of over 100 old temples

Many families visit the Dwarka temple and add Aundha or Jageshwar when they are nearby. Jageshwar fits naturally into a Kumaon or Adi Kailash yatra from Uttarakhand; see our Adi Kailash permit guide if that is your route.

Dwarka has direct trains from Ahmedabad, Rajkot and Mumbai. The Sudarshan Setu, a cable-stayed bridge from Okha to Bet Dwarka opened in February 2024, means you no longer need a boat for the island.

A one-day Nageshwar and Bet Dwarka plan

  1. Early morning: mangla aarti at Dwarkadhish, then breakfast.
  2. Mid-morning: drive north to Gopi Talav, then Nageshwar for darshan and abhishek.
  3. Late morning: continue to Okha and cross the Sudarshan Setu to Bet Dwarka, believed to be where Shri Krishna lived and met Sudama.
  4. Afternoon: on the way back, Rukmini Devi temple, about 2 km outside Dwarka.
  5. Evening: sandhya aarti at Dwarkadhish and the flag ceremony; a walk on the Gomti ghat.

Tips for families and senior citizens

Nageshwar is one of the easier Jyotirlingas physically. The temple is on flat ground with a short walk from the parking area, and only a few steps lead down into the sanctum; elderly yatris can hold the railing or take darshan from the edge of the chamber. The coast is hot and bright for most of the year, so carry water, caps and a light cotton cloth for the head, and plan the Nageshwar and Bet Dwarka run for the morning. Keep the afternoon for rest at the hotel, and return to Dwarkadhish for the cooler evening aarti.

When is the best time to visit?

October to March is the most comfortable. April to June is hot and humid, and the monsoon is mild on this coast but can disrupt travel. Shravan Mondays and Mahashivratri (6 March 2027 by the panchang) are the busiest days at Nageshwar. Janmashtami (August or September) brings enormous crowds to Dwarka itself, so book hotels months ahead if you plan to be here then.

Nearby tirthas

  • Dwarkadhish temple: one of the four Char Dham of India and one of the Sapta Puri.
  • Bet Dwarka: Krishna’s island residence, across the Sudarshan Setu.
  • Rukmini Devi temple: with finely carved walls, a short drive from town.
  • Gopi Talav: source of the yellow gopi chandan clay.
  • Bhadkeshwar Mahadev: a Shiva temple on the rocks by the sea.
  • Porbandar: Sudama temple and Kirti Mandir, on the road to Somnath.

Combining Nageshwar with other Jyotirlingas

Gujarat’s two Jyotirlingas are five hours apart along the coast. A 4- or 5-day Saurashtra yatra from Rajkot covers Dwarka, Nageshwar and Bet Dwarka, then Porbandar and Somnath. From Gujarat, the Malwa pair of Mahakaleshwar and Omkareshwar is the next closest. Our 12 Jyotirlinga list sets out the full regional plan.

How we can help

Our Nageshwar Jyotirlinga yatra (2 nights, 3 days from Rajkot, from ₹15,000 per person) gives you two nights in Dwarka with a full day for Nageshwar, Bet Dwarka and Rukmini Devi. To complete both Gujarat Jyotirlingas, choose the Somnath and Dwarka yatra (4 nights, 5 days, from ₹22,000 per person). If Dwarka as a Char Dham is your main sankalp, see the Dwarkadhish Dham Yatra (from ₹14,500 per person). More plans are on our Jyotirlinga yatra page. Frequently asked questions

What are the Nageshwar Jyotirlinga timings?

Darshan is generally available from about 6 am to 9 pm. Puja and abhishek are usually done from about 6:30 am to 5:30 pm and again from 8 pm to 9 pm. Timings can change on Mahashivratri, Shravan Mondays and other festivals, so check locally before going, especially if you want abhishek.

How far is Nageshwar from Dwarka?

About 17 to 18 km, roughly 25 to 30 minutes by car, on the road from Dwarka to Okha. Most yatris visit it on the same outing as Gopi Talav and Bet Dwarka. Taxis and auto-rickshaws from Dwarka offer a standard round covering all three, which takes most of a day.

Is there a dress code at Nageshwar?

Men may be asked to wear a dhoti to go close to the linga for abhishek, and the temple can provide one. For general darshan, modest clothing is enough. Avoid shorts and beachwear. Photography is not allowed inside the sanctum, which is a small chamber a few steps below ground level.

Is Nageshwar near Dwarka the real Jyotirlinga?

It is the most widely visited and accepted, as the Shiva Purana places Darukavana by the western sea. Aundha Nagnath in Maharashtra and Jageshwar near Almora in Uttarakhand are also honoured as the Nageshwar Jyotirlinga by many devotees. Families often visit the Dwarka temple and add one of the others when travelling nearby.

Can we do Nageshwar and Bet Dwarka on the same day?

Yes, it is the standard plan. Nageshwar lies on the way to Okha, and Bet Dwarka is reached across the Sudarshan Setu bridge, opened in 2024. Leave Dwarka after breakfast, visit Gopi Talav, Nageshwar and Bet Dwarka, and stop at Rukmini Devi temple on the way back, returning in time for the evening aarti.

How do we reach Nageshwar by air or train?

Dwarka railway station, about 18 km away, has direct trains from Ahmedabad, Rajkot and Mumbai. The nearest airports with limited flights are Jamnagar and Porbandar, each about 2.5 to 3 hours away. Rajkot has the most flights and trains and is about 5 hours from Dwarka by road.

Which Jyotirlinga is closest to Nageshwar?

Somnath, the other Jyotirlinga of Gujarat, about 250 km south along the coast, or roughly five hours by road via Porbandar. Most families combine the two in a 4- or 5-day Saurashtra yatra, with two nights at Dwarka and two at Somnath, starting and ending at Rajkot.

What is the significance of the large Shiva statue at Nageshwar?

The seated Shiva in the courtyard is about 25 metres (around 80 feet) tall and can be seen from a long way off across the flat coastal land. It is a modern addition rather than part of the ancient shrine, but it has become the image most yatris remember and photograph from outside the temple.
