Highlights & Route

Adi Kailash, also called Chhota Kailash, stands in the Vyas valley of Pithoragarh district, close to the borders with Tibet and Nepal. On its lap lies Parvati Kund (Parvati Sarovar) and the small Shiv-Parvati temple at Jolingkong. A little further along the Kalapani side of the valley, the snow pattern on Om Parvat forms the sacred syllable ॐ and is viewed from Nabidhang. For a long time this was a foot trek of many days. New border roads now take vehicles almost all the way, so families and older yatris can do it in about a week.

This 8-day plan starts and ends at Kathgodam railway station. We drive up through Pithoragarh to Dharchula, where your Inner Line Permit is completed, and then into the high valley. Gunji is our base for two nights in local homestays. From there we make one day visit to Jolingkong for Adi Kailash darshan and Parvati Kund, and a second to Nabidhang for Om Parvat. The return is broken at Chaukori or Didihat and at Bhimtal, so no day is rushed.

Please be clear about one thing: this is a remote, high-altitude yatra. The temple area near Parvati Kund sits around 14,500 ft, and Gunji is roughly 3,200 m. Roads above Dharchula are narrow and can close after rain or a landslide. Stays in Gunji are simple homestays, and power and phone signal there are limited. With steady pacing, warm clothes and a fit body, it is a very rewarding darshan, and our team handles the paperwork and the planning.

Exact 2027 batch dates will be added here once the Pithoragarh district administration announces the season. In 2026 the yatra opened on 1 May and was paused for the monsoon in July and August.

Route

Kathgodam → Pithoragarh → Dharchula → Gunji → Jolingkong (Adi Kailash, Parvati Kund) → Gunji → Nabidhang (Om Parvat) → Gunji → Dharchula → Chaukori / Didihat → Bhimtal → Kathgodam

Good to know before you book

The yatra is open to Indian citizens only. Every yatri needs an Inner Line Permit, and the final check happens at the SDM office in Dharchula.
A recent medical fitness certificate from an MBBS doctor and a police verification are part of the permit file. Start arranging them about a month before travel.
There are no ATMs or reliable UPI beyond Dharchula. Carry enough cash for tea, snacks, ponies and small purchases.
Mobile signal is weak or missing above Dharchula, with only patchy BSNL coverage around Gunji. Tell your family you may be out of contact for two to three days.
Plan for a buffer day at the end of your yatra. Rain, snow or road repair can delay the return by a day.

Day 1 :

Kathgodam to Pithoragarh

Our driver meets you at your arrival point (airport, railway station or hotel) at the agreed time at Kathgodam. From there the road climbs steadily through the Kumaon hills to Pithoragarh. This is a full-day drive, so wear comfortable clothes and keep light snacks and any regular medicines handy. Check in, have dinner and rest early.

Day 2 :

Pithoragarh to Dharchula

A shorter drive takes us down to Dharchula on the Kali river, with Nepal visible on the far bank. After lunch we go together to complete your Inner Line Permit file and medical formalities at the SDM office. Keep your originals, photocopies and photos ready. The evening is free for a walk in the market, and this is also the last place to withdraw cash.

Day 3 :

Dharchula to Gunji

Today we move into the high country. The road follows the Kali gorge with waterfalls and steep cliffs, past villages of the Vyas valley, and there are permit checkposts along the way. We reach Gunji, our base for the next nights. Rest, drink plenty of water and avoid exertion so your body can adjust to the height.

Day 4 :

Gunji to Jolingkong (Adi Kailash) and back

An early start for the drive up the Kuti valley to Jolingkong. From the vehicle point, a short walk leads to Parvati Kund and the Shiv-Parvati temple, with Adi Kailash rising behind the lake. Take your time for darshan and prayers. Gauri Kund is a longer, harder walk and is optional for very fit yatris only. Ponies may be available locally at extra cost. We return to Gunji by afternoon.

Day 5 :

Gunji to Nabidhang (Om Parvat) and back

After breakfast we drive towards Kalapani and Nabidhang, the viewpoint for Om Parvat. On a clear morning the snow ॐ on the mountain face is easy to see, so we aim to arrive early before clouds build. On the way you can stop at the Kali temple at Kalapani if time and weather allow. Return to Gunji or Nabi for the night.

Day 6 :

Gunji to Chaukori / Didihat

A long day on the road. We drive back down to Dharchula, where phone signal and ATMs return, and continue to Didihat or Chaukori. If the sky is clear, Chaukori gives a wide view of the Himalayan peaks in the evening and morning.

Day 7 :

Chaukori / Didihat to Bhimtal

A relaxed drive through pine and oak forests and small hill towns to Bhimtal. In the evening you can sit by the lake or take a boat ride at your own cost. This easy day also acts as a buffer in case of delays higher up.

Day 8 :

Bhimtal to Kathgodam

After breakfast, a short drive down to Kathgodam. Drop at your departure point (airport, railway station or hotel) in time for your onward train or bus. The yatra ends here with Bholenath's blessings.

Is a permit needed for Adi Kailash and Om Parvat?

Yes. Every yatri needs an Inner Line Permit. In 2026, pilgrims could begin registration online through the KMVN and Uttarakhand eDistrict portals, but final verification at the SDM office in Dharchula was compulsory. Only use official channels, as the administration has warned about fake permits. We help you with the full process on Day 2.

Can foreigners or NRIs do the Adi Kailash yatra?

No. The route passes through a restricted border area, and permits are issued to Indian citizens only.

Which documents and medical certificate do I need?

Carry a government photo ID, passport-size photos, a recent medical fitness certificate from an MBBS doctor and a police verification certificate. Some seasons also ask for a notarised affidavit. Rules can change from year to year, so we send you the current checklist once you book.

How much walking is there? Is it suitable for senior citizens?

Vehicles reach close to both Jolingkong and the Om Parvat viewpoint, so the walking is short. The main challenge is altitude, not distance. Fit senior citizens with their doctor’s clearance usually manage well, but anyone with serious heart or lung problems should not attempt it. Please speak to us about the age and health of each member before booking.

When is the best time to go?

The yatra usually opens around May. May–June and September–October are the main windows. July and August are avoided because of monsoon landslides, and in 2026 the yatra was paused in those months. The route closes for winter with snow. 2027 dates will be added once announced.

Will my phone and UPI work on the route?

Not reliably. Signal is weak or absent above Dharchula, with patchy BSNL around Gunji. There are no ATMs beyond Dharchula, and homestays and local services generally take cash, so withdraw enough money there.

Can I see both Adi Kailash and Om Parvat on the same yatra?

Yes. This package gives a separate day for each, both from the Gunji base, so you are not rushed and have a better chance of clear views.
