Highlights & Route
Danteshwari Devi is the family goddess of the old Bastar kingdom and the town of Dantewada takes its very name from her. The temple, built in the 14th century, marks the place where the tooth (dant) of Sati is believed to have fallen, making it one of the 52 Shakti Peeths. It sits where the Dankini and Shankini rivers meet, in a forested tribal belt of southern Chhattisgarh that few yatris from the north ever reach. This package takes you there safely and comfortably, with Raipur as your base.
The journey itself is part of the experience. From Raipur you travel south through Dhamtari and Kanker, climb the Keskal ghat and cross the Bastar plateau past Jagdalpur before reaching Dantewada. It is a long road day, roughly 380 km each way, so we start before dawn and keep the rest of the yatra easy. Day three is a relaxed round of Raipur: the ISKCON temple, the Jain temple at Kevalya Dham, the Mahant Ghasidas museum and the lakeside at Vivekanand Sarovar.
As with all our yatras, our yatra team arranges everything from airport pickup to the final drop: a private air-conditioned vehicle, three nights in a good Raipur hotel, vegetarian breakfast and dinner, and a coordinator who is one phone call away. You travel at your own pace, in your own vehicle, with no fixed group to wait for.
Route
Raipur (arrival) → Dantewada (Danteshwari Shakti Peeth, same-day return) → Raipur (ISKCON, Kevalya Dham Jain Temple, Mahant Ghasidas Museum, Vivekanand Sarovar) → Raipur (departure)
Good to know before you book
- Raipur is served by Swami Vivekananda Airport and Raipur Junction, both well connected to Delhi; flights from Dehradun go via Delhi.
- Dantewada is a long drive from Raipur (around 380 km one way via Jagdalpur). Day 2 starts very early and ends late; families with elderly yatris can add an overnight at Jagdalpur for a small extra cost.
- Danteshwari temple tradition asks men to wear a dhoti or lungi rather than trousers inside the main shrine; the temple provides cloth on loan, and we also carry spares in the vehicle.
- Bastar Dussehra, a 75-day tribal festival that ends around Dussehra, is the most colourful time to visit, but hotels and roads are busy; book early for October dates.
- October to March is the comfortable season; Bastar is hot in April–June and very green but rainy in July–September.
- Mobile coverage is patchy on parts of the Bastar road, so download offline maps and inform family before leaving Raipur.
