Highlights & Route
Prayagraj, the old Allahabad, is where the Ganga and the Yamuna meet, with the unseen Saraswati said to join them beneath the water. For a pilgrim it is the place of the Sangam snan; for anyone who loves food it is also a city of kachori-sabzi breakfasts, winter jalebis, chaat in Civil Lines and the crowded eating lanes of Loknath in the old town. This day visit gives you both in a comfortable, unhurried way.
We begin at the Sangam while the light is soft and the sands are quiet. A boat takes you out to the exact meeting line of the two rivers, where you can bathe, sprinkle the water or offer tarpan for your ancestors. From there we move to the temples that every Prayagraj pilgrim visits: the reclining Bade Hanuman near the fort wall, the Alopi Devi Shakti Peeth where a cradle is worshipped in place of an idol, and Mankameshwar on the Yamuna bank, and we look at the Akshayvat and Patalpuri temple area in the fort as far as the day’s rules allow.
Between the temples our coordinator takes you through the heritage side of the city: the Mughal tombs of Khusro Bagh, the colonial lanes and, if you wish, Anand Bhavan, the Nehru family home that is now a museum. Lunch is at your own pace in an old-city eatery of your choice. The vehicle is private and air-conditioned, so children and elderly members can rest in between while others explore.
Route
Prayagraj Junction / airport / hotel → Triveni Sangam (boat) → Bade Hanuman Mandir → Akshayvat and fort area → Alopi Devi Mandir → Mankameshwar Mandir → Loknath lanes and Chowk for lunch → Khusro Bagh (and Anand Bhavan if open) → Civil Lines for evening chaat → drop
Good to know before you book
- The Akshayvat and Patalpuri temple lie inside Allahabad Fort, which is an army area. Public entry is limited to the marked corridor and can be stopped without notice; the rest of the fort is closed.
- The Bade Hanuman idol lies in a pit below ground level and is usually submerged by the river for some weeks in the monsoon; darshan then is of the water-covered shrine from outside.
- Alopi Devi temple generally opens from early morning till evening and has no idol; devotees worship a wooden doli (cradle).
- Anand Bhavan and the Allahabad Museum are closed on Mondays, so a Monday tour spends more time at Khusro Bagh instead.
- Lunch and snacks are not included, so that you can choose what you like; our coordinator will suggest clean, well-known vegetarian places.
- Boatmen at the Sangam are paid directly. Agree the fare before boarding and avoid anyone who offers a ‘special’ darshan for cash.
