Highlights & Route

For many devotees the full Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is out of reach because of age, health, cost or time. The aerial darshan is a gentler answer. A commercial aircraft takes off from Nepalgunj in western Nepal, climbs to cruising height and flies along the Himalaya so that passengers can see Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar across the border in Tibet, along with Rara and Phoksundo lakes and the high peaks of far-western Nepal. The flight lasts a little over an hour and every passenger gets a window seat. No permits, no altitude sickness, no trekking.

Nepalgunj is only about 190 km from Lucknow by road, across the Rupaidiha border post. That is what makes this three-day plan possible: drive to Nepalgunj on the first day, fly in the morning of the second, and drive back into India on the third with a stop at Ayodhya for darshan at the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Mandir, Hanuman Garhi and the Saryu ghats before the evening drop in Lucknow.

Indian citizens do not need a visa or passport to enter Nepal by road, but you do need a passport or an Election Commission voter ID card, and the airline asks for the same document at check-in. We handle the border formalities, the hotel in Nepalgunj and the vehicle on both sides. The flight runs on fixed dates and depends on clear weather, so we recommend keeping one buffer day if your onward travel is tight.

Good to know before you book

• The aerial darshan is a mountain flight on a jet aircraft operated from Nepalgunj; it does not land anywhere near Kailash and you do not set foot in Tibet.
• Flights depend on clear visibility. If the morning is cloudy the airline may delay or cancel and rebook, so a flexible return plan helps.
• Carry a passport or voter ID. Aadhaar alone is not accepted by Nepal immigration or by the airline for Indian citizens.
• Indian currency notes of Rs 100 and below are freely accepted in Nepalgunj; higher-value Indian notes are not officially permitted in Nepal.
• Phones and electronic items are not allowed inside the Ram Mandir premises in Ayodhya; locker facilities are provided at the entry.
• Children, elderly yatris and people with heart or lung conditions can take this flight comfortably, because the cabin is pressurised like any normal airliner.

Darshan, puja and timing notes

The Ram Janmabhoomi Mandir in Ayodhya opens for darshan in two sessions, a morning session and an afternoon-to-evening session, with a pause around midday for bhog. Hours have been revised several times since 2024 and differ on Sundays and festivals, so we confirm them for your Day 3. Our plan reaches Ayodhya in the afternoon session, when queues are usually lighter than in the morning.

• Aarti passes: entry to the Mangala, Shringar and Shayan aartis needs a free pass from the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra website (srjbtkshetra.org), booked in advance with each person’s ID. These aartis fall outside our Day 3 timing; ask for the extended plan with a night in Ayodhya if you want one.
• Order of darshan: by tradition yatris first take darshan at Hanuman Garhi, the seat of Ayodhya’s guardian, and then go to Ram Lalla. Hanuman Garhi is reached by a flight of steps, which elders can take slowly.
• What to leave behind: phones, bags, footwear and electronic items go into the free lockers near the entry. Carry only your ID and a little cash.
• Flight morning: the Kailash flight is planned for early morning, when the Himalaya is clearest. Our Day 2 starts before dawn and the rest of the day is kept free as a weather buffer.

Festivals to plan around. Ram Navami falls on 15 April 2027 and brings very large crowds and long queues. Deepotsav on the eve of Diwali, when lakhs of diyas are lit along Ram Ki Paidi, closes many roads. Vivah Panchami (November–December) and the Kartik parikramas also crowd the town. On these dates the Day 3 drive and darshan can take much longer; pick other dates or add a night in Ayodhya.

Is this yatra right for you?

Physically this is one of the easiest yatras we run: a pressurised flight and level walking at Ayodhya. It suits senior citizens, heart and lung patients who are fit to fly, and families with children. The real effort is the road: Day 3 is about eight hours of driving with darshan in between, and the flight depends on the weather.
