Shri Krishna is worshipped in many forms: as the child Gopal and Bal Krishna, as the playful cowherd of Braj, as the king of Dwarka, as Parthasarathy the charioteer of Arjun, and as Jagannath, Lord of the Universe. Each great temple holds one of these forms, with its own customs of seva and darshan.

This guide lists the major Sri Krishna temples, why each matters, the festival to plan around, how to reach and how to combine them into a practical yatra. Darshan timings change often, especially around festivals, so please confirm with the temple before you travel.

Why is Dwarkadhish temple so important?

Dwarka is the western dham of the Char Dham of Adi Shankaracharya, with Badrinath, Puri and Rameswaram. The Dwarkadhish temple, also called Jagat Mandir, stands on the Gomti creek. It is a five-storey structure on 72 pillars, with a spire about 78 metres high. Yatris enter by the Moksha Dwar from the market side and the Swarg Dwar leads down 56 steps to the Gomti ghats.

The large flag on the shikhara is changed several times a day, and families offer the flag as a sankalp through the temple.

How to reach: Dwarka railway station is about 2 km from the temple. Jamnagar is the nearest airport, with Porbandar and Rajkot as other options. Our Dwarkadhish Dham Yatra covers Dwarka, Bet Dwarka and Nageshwar Jyotirlinga.

How do you reach Bet Dwarka?

Bet (Beyt) Dwarka is an island off Okha, about 30 km north of Dwarka town. Tradition holds that this was Shri Krishna’s residence, and the temple here keeps the memory of his friend Sudama’s visit. Since February 2024, the Sudarshan Setu, a cable-stayed bridge of about 2.3 km, links Okha to the island by road, so yatris no longer depend on boats. Most families do Bet Dwarka and Nageshwar in one half-day.

What should you see at Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi, Mathura?

The Krishna Janmasthan complex marks the place where Shri Krishna is believed to have been born in Kansa’s prison. It has three main parts: the Garbha Griha, a small shrine with a prison-cell setting; the Keshavdev temple, built in 1957–58; and the Bhagavata Bhavan, with Radha Krishna in the main shrine and the Bhagavad Gita engraved on copper plates along the parikrama.

Security is strict. Mobile phones, bags and cameras are usually not allowed, so leave them at the hotel or use the lockers. Janmashtami night, with the midnight abhishek, is the biggest event of the year. Panchangs give Janmashtami on 25 August 2027 (some calendars mark 24 August); check your local calendar.

How to reach: Mathura Junction is well connected to Delhi, Agra and Mumbai. Delhi is about 180 km by the Yamuna Expressway.

Which temples should you visit in Vrindavan?

Banke Bihari: The deity was first worshipped by Swami Haridas, and the present temple was built by his followers in the 1860s. Darshan is in short glimpses: a curtain is drawn every few minutes, from the belief that Bihari ji would follow a devotee home if gazed at too long. There is no daily mangla aarti; it is held only on Janmashtami. Charan darshan of the Lord’s feet is traditionally offered on Akshaya Tritiya. Lanes are narrow and very crowded on weekends and festivals, so seniors should go on a weekday morning.

Prem Mandir: Built by Jagadguru Kripalu Maharaj’s organisation and opened in February 2012, this white marble temple of Radha Krishna and Sita Ram stands on a large campus with gardens and fountains. Many families come in the evening, when the temple is lit in changing colours.

ISKCON Krishna Balaram Mandir: Opened by Srila Prabhupada on Ram Navami in 1975, it is a peaceful temple with continuous kirtan. His white marble samadhi stands at the entrance.

Our guide to temples in Mathura and Vrindavan covers Radha Raman, Radha Vallabh, Nidhivan, Gokul and Barsana in detail.

What makes Jagannath Puri different?

Puri is the eastern dham of the Char Dham. Jagannath is worshipped with his elder brother Balabhadra and sister Subhadra in wooden forms. The present temple dates to the 12th century, begun under King Anantavarman Chodaganga. Mahaprasad cooked in the temple kitchen, without onion or garlic, is a central part of the yatra.

The Rath Yatra in Ashadha (June or July) takes the three deities on huge chariots to the Gundicha temple, about 3 km away. Panchangs give 5 July 2027; the temple confirms its own calendar. Entry to the main temple is restricted to Hindus (Jains, Sikhs and Buddhists are also allowed).

How to reach: Bhubaneswar airport is about 60 km away; Puri has its own railway station. See our Jagannath Puri Dham Yatra.

Which are the famous Krishna temples in South India?

Guruvayur (Kerala): Guruvayurappan is a four-armed standing form of Vishnu worshipped as Krishna, carved in shaligram stone. The temple is about 26 km from Thrissur. Only Hindus may enter, and the dress code is strict: men wear a plain mundu (dhoti) without a shirt; women may wear a saree, skirt and blouse, or churidar. Guruvayur Ekadashi falls in the Malayalam month of Vrischikam (November–December). Our guide to famous temples in Kerala has more detail.

Udupi Sri Krishna Matha (Karnataka): Founded by Madhvacharya in the 13th century, the matha is run in turn by eight mathas (the Ashta Mathas), each for two years; the change of charge, called Paryaya, is held in even-numbered years. Devotees see Bal Krishna through a small window, the Kanakana Kindi, linked to the saint Kanakadasa. Mangaluru airport is about 60 km away. Our Murudeshwar and Udupi Yatra includes darshan here.

Parthasarathy, Chennai: In Triplicane, this Pallava-era temple is one of the 108 Divya Desams, sung by Thirumangai Alvar and Pey Alvar. The deity has a moustache and is believed to bear marks from Bhishma’s arrows. Vaikunta Ekadasi in Margazhi (December–January) draws the largest crowds.

Which Krishna temples are in Rajasthan and Gujarat?

Shrinathji, Nathdwara: The child Krishna lifting Govardhan was moved from Govardhan in 1672 and later installed at Nathdwara, about 50 km from Udaipur. In the Pushtimarg tradition of Vallabhacharya the deity is served as a living child, and darshan happens in short jhankis through the day, with the shringar changed several times. Annakut after Diwali, Janmashtami and Holi are the big days.

Govind Dev Ji, Jaipur: Inside the City Palace complex, this deity was rediscovered in Vrindavan by Rupa Goswami in the 16th century and brought to Jaipur over several decades after 1670. There are seven aartis daily, from Mangla to Shayan, and the courtyard is packed at each one.

Ranchhodraiji, Dakor: In Kheda district, Gujarat, the present temple dates to 1772. Krishna here is Ranchhodrai, the form who left the battlefield. Sharad Purnima and the Phagun Purnima (Holi) fair draw very large crowds, and many devotees walk to Dakor from Ahmedabad and nearby towns. Nadiad (35 km) and Anand are the nearest major stations.
