Highlights & Route

The coast of Uttara Kannada and Udupi districts is dotted with shrines that trace back to a single story: Ravana’s attempt to carry Shiva’s Atmalinga to Lanka, and the fragments that fell along this shore when Ganesha tricked him into setting it down. Gokarna holds the Atmalinga itself; Murudeshwara, with its 123-foot Shiva statue and twenty-storey gopura, marks where the covering cloth fell. Add the Idagunji Ganapati, the Vishnumurthy temple at Kodlamane and the Krishna Matha at Udupi founded by Madhvacharya, and you have a short, satisfying tirth yatra with the Arabian Sea alongside the whole way.

We base you at Murudeshwara for both nights so that there is only one hotel change-free stretch and the sea is outside your window. Day one covers the drive up from Mangaluru and Murudeshwara itself; day two is a loop north to Kodlamane, Gokarna, the Mirjan fort and Om beach; day three returns south via Udupi, with time for the Malpe ferry to St Mary’s Island when the sea allows, before your evening departure from Mangaluru.

Distances are modest (the longest day is about 180 km of driving in total) and all temples are reached by car with a short walk. Gokarna has a dress rule for men that we explain below. This is an easy yatra for parents and grandparents, and a lovely one for children because of the beaches.

Route

Mangaluru → Murudeshwara (2 nights) → Kodlamane → Gokarna → Mirjan → Murudeshwara → Udupi → Malpe → Mangaluru

Good to know before you book

  • Murudeshwara is about 155 km north of Mangaluru along NH-66; the drive takes three to three-and-a-half hours.
  • At the Gokarna Mahabaleshwar temple men enter the inner shrine bare-chested in a dhoti, and women in sari or salwar; the Atmalinga can be touched during set hours.
  • The Udupi Krishna Matha offers darshan through the nine-holed Kanakana Kindi window; the Matha’s free Annaprasada lunch is open to all devotees.
  • The Malpe to St Mary’s Island ferry is suspended during the monsoon (roughly June to September) and on rough-sea days.
  • Temples on this coast close between about 1 pm and 3 pm for the afternoon; we sequence the day to avoid arriving in that window.
  • Vegetarian Udupi cuisine is available everywhere, and most hotels serve sattvic food on request.

Yatra Highlights

  • The Atmalinga at Gokarna and the 123-ft Shiva of Murudeshwara
  • Krishna darshan through the Kanakana Kindi at Udupi
