Highlights & Route

Of the 108 Divya Desams sung by the Alvar saints, thirteen lie in Kerala, the ancient Malai Nadu. They are small, low-roofed temples with copper-tiled roofs and oil-lamp courtyards, very different from the towering gopurams of Tamil Nadu, and most pilgrims who have done Tirupati and Srirangam have never seen them. This yatra covers six of them, Thrikkakara, Thirumoozhikulam, Thrichittatt, Thripuliyoor, Thiruvanvandoor and Thrikkodithanam, along with the Kodungallur Bhagavathy temple, the fierce Bhadrakali shrine of central Kerala.

The route is a gentle arc from Kochi south through Alappuzha to Kottayam and back to Kochi. Nothing is more than two hours from the previous stop. Alappuzha gives you two nights beside the backwaters, with the Chengannur-area Divya Desams visited from there; Kottayam is the base for Thrikkodithanam. A morning at Fort Kochi, with its Chinese fishing nets and old churches, adds a little variety to the temple days.

Kerala temples keep strict customs: men enter in a mundu (dhoti) with the upper body bare in most shrines, women in sari, set-mundu or salwar with dupatta, and several temples admit Hindus only. Timings are split, with a long closure from late morning to late afternoon. We have arranged each day around these, and explain the customs before you arrive so that nothing comes as a surprise.

Route

Kochi (1 night) → Thrikkakara → Kodungallur → Thirumoozhikulam → Fort Kochi → Alappuzha (2 nights) → Thrichittatt → Thripuliyoor → Thiruvanvandoor → Thrikkodithanam → Kottayam (1 night) → Kochi

Good to know before you book

  • Most Kerala temples open roughly 4–5 am to about 11 am and again 5 pm to 8 pm; the afternoon is closed, so we plan two darshan windows a day.
  • Dress code: men wear a mundu or dhoti and remove shirts inside most temples; women wear sari, set-mundu or salwar with dupatta. Mundus can be bought cheaply at shops outside.
  • Several of these temples, including Kodungallur and the Divya Desams, admit Hindus only; non-Hindu members of the group can see the exteriors and join the rest of the local darshan.
  • Photography is not permitted inside Kerala temple compounds.
  • Alappuzha backwater boat rides (shikara or houseboat) are optional and charged separately; ask us to arrange one for the free evening.
  • Food is pure vegetarian at temple towns; most hotels serve Kerala sadya-style meals on request.

Yatra Highlights

  • Darshan of Bhadrakali at Kodungallur, the great Bhagavathy temple of Kerala
