Highlights & Route
This is our shortest Shakti Peeth yatra in Andhra Pradesh, built for families who want a meaningful darshan without taking many days off. You arrive at Rajahmundry (Rajamahendravaram), a temple town on the banks of the Godavari, and over two easy days you visit two seats of the Goddess that most North Indian yatris have only read about. The pace is gentle, the drives are short, and there is time in the evening to sit by the river.
Day one is spent in Rajahmundry itself, with darshan at the Maa Vishweshwari Shakti Peeth and a quiet evening on the Godavari ghats. Day two takes you about 65 km north-east to Pithapuram, a very old temple town where the Puruhutika Devi shrine stands inside the Kukkuteswara Swamy temple complex. Pithapuram is also known as Pada Gaya, and many families perform pitru rituals here, so we can arrange extra time if you wish.
Everything is handled by our Dehradun team from start to finish: your pickup at Rajahmundry airport or railway station, a private air-conditioned vehicle, a clean hotel on the river side of town, vegetarian meals and drop-off on the last day. You simply need to reach Rajahmundry; we will suggest convenient flights and trains when you enquire.
Route
Rajahmundry (arrival, Vishweshwari Shakti Peeth, Godavari ghats) → Pithapuram (Puruhutika Devi and Kukkuteswara Swamy temple) → Rajahmundry (departure)
Good to know before you book
- Rajahmundry has its own airport (RJA) and a major railway station on the Chennai–Howrah line, so reaching the start point is simple from most Indian cities.
- Pithapuram is about 65 km from Rajahmundry and roughly 16 km from Kakinada; the drive takes around an hour and a half on good roads.
- Coastal Andhra is hot and humid from March to June; October to February is the most comfortable season for this yatra.
- Temple timings and special darshan rules can change on festival days such as Navratri; we reconfirm them a day before your visit.
- Pitru rituals (Pada Gaya) at Pithapuram are optional and arranged with local priests at your own cost.
- Traditional dress is appreciated in both temples; men should carry a dhoti or wear full trousers.
Darshan, puja and timing notes
Temples in coastal Andhra follow a morning and evening pattern: open from about 6 am to noon, closed for the afternoon, and open again from about 4 pm to 8 pm. We therefore keep Rajahmundry darshan for the evening of Day 1 and reach Pithapuram in the morning of Day 2, so neither visit falls in the midday closure.
- Pithapuram: Puruhutika Devi is counted among the eighteen Maha Shakti Peethas and sits inside the Kukkuteswara Swamy temple complex, whose Shiva linga is held to be swayambhu. Kumkum archana for the Goddess and abhishek for Kukkuteswara can be booked at the counter.
- Pada Gaya: the Pada Gaya Sarovar beside the temple is where families perform pinda pradanam, believed to be as meritorious as at Gaya. Bring the names and gotra of the departed.
- Sripada Srivallabha: Pithapuram is also the birthplace of Sripada Srivallabha, revered as an incarnation of Dattatreya; his Mahasamsthanam is a short drive from the Shakti Peeth and worth adding if you are Datta devotees.
- Dress: traditional clothes are preferred; men in dhoti or full trousers, women in saree or salwar.
Festivals to plan around: Godavari Pushkaralu is due in 2027, reported to begin on 26 June 2027 and run for 12 days, with Rajahmundry at its centre and crowds expected in crores. Ghats, roads and hotels will be under heavy pressure, so book very early or choose other dates. Navratri (October) and Datta Jayanti (December) are busy at Pithapuram.
Is this yatra right for you?
Yes, if you want a short and easy Shakti Peeth yatra: two days, level temple floors, a few steps and about 75 km each way on good roads. It suits senior citizens, children and anyone with only a weekend. Coastal Andhra is hot from March to June, so plan October to February where you can.
It is not the right fit if you want the bigger Andhra and Telangana tirthas. Srisailam, which holds both a Jyotirlinga and the Bhramaramba Shakti Peeth, is covered by our Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga yatra (2N/3D from Hyderabad) and the longer Hyderabad Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga Yatra (3N/4D). If you plan to travel during Pushkaralu or want to add Annavaram or Draksharamam, use the enquiry form on this page or call/WhatsApp us (numbers on our Contact page).
Getting there and nearby tirthas
Rajahmundry airport is about 55 km from Pithapuram; Rajahmundry and Samalkot stations are on the main Howrah–Chennai line. With one extra day, three strong additions are close by:
- Draksharamam (about 45 km from Rajahmundry): Bhimeswara Swamy, one of the Pancharama kshetras, with Manikyamba Devi, also worshipped as a Shakti Peeth.
- Samalkot: Kumararama Bhimeswara, another Pancharama temple, on the road to Pithapuram.
- Annavaram: the Satyanarayana Swamy hill temple, where families perform the Satyanarayana vratam.
Our other temples of the south are listed under South India yatras, and all Goddess yatras under Shakti Peeth yatras.
