Tiruchirappalli Thanjavur Divya Desham Yatra

4 Days

Highlights & Route

Thanjavur was the capital of the Cholas, and while its Brihadeeswarar temple draws most visitors, the town and its surroundings also hold several Divya Desams that are rarely visited: the three linked shrines of the Thanjai Mamani Koil on the town’s edge, Thirukkandiyur with its paired Vishnu and Shiva temples, Kapisthalam on the Cauvery and Thirukkoodalur further east. This four-day visit pairs these with the great temples of Trichy, so you see both the most famous Vaishnava shrine in India and some of its quietest.

The first day is at Srirangam and its neighbours. The second day moves 55 km to Thanjavur via Uthamar Kovil, with the afternoon and evening at the Brihadeeswarar temple, whose 66 m vimana and single-stone capstone have stood for a thousand years, and the Maratha palace with its Saraswathi Mahal library. The third day is a loop along the Cauvery through the small Divya Desams and, time permitting, Nachiyar Kovil near Kumbakonam, returning to Thanjavur for the evening.

Both towns have good hotels and the driving is light throughout. The yatra begins and ends at Tiruchirappalli airport or junction, about an hour from Thanjavur, and suits families and elderly yatris who want heritage as well as darshan.

Route

Tiruchirappalli (Srirangam, Thiruvanaikaval, Uraiyur) → Uthamar Kovil → Thanjavur (Brihadeeswarar, palace) → Thanjai Mamani Koil → Thirukkandiyur → Kapisthalam → Thirukkoodalur → Nachiyar Kovil → Thanjavur → Tiruchirappalli

Good to know before you book

  • Brihadeeswarar temple (the Big Temple) is a UNESCO World Heritage site under the Archaeological Survey of India as well as a living temple; it is open through the day but the sanctum follows temple hours, closing around noon and reopening in the evening.
  • The Thanjai Mamani Koil is counted as one Divya Desam but consists of three separate temples, Neelamegha Perumal, Manikundra Perumal and Narasimha, a short distance apart on the Vallam road.
  • Srirangam and the smaller Divya Desams follow the usual Tamil Nadu hours, closing between about noon and 4 pm.
  • Traditional dress is expected at all temples; the Big Temple’s courtyard is open stone and very hot by midday, so carry socks or visit in the evening.
  • The Maratha palace, art gallery and Saraswathi Mahal library have entry fees paid directly; the library is closed on some weekdays.
  • October to February is the pleasant season; the Big Temple’s annual festival and Sadaya Vizha (Rajaraja Chola’s birth anniversary) in October–November draw crowds.

Darshan, puja and timing notes

Srirangam’s Ranganathaswamy temple opens at about 6 am and runs until about 9 pm, with short breaks during the day when the sanctum is closed for pujas and naivedyam. The Brihadeeswarar temple at Thanjavur opens at about 6 am, closes around 12:30 pm and reopens from about 4 pm to 8:30 pm; the courtyard is open longer than the sanctum. The smaller Divya Desams around Thanjavur keep village hours, roughly 7 to 11 am and 5 to 8 pm, which is why Day 3 starts early.

  • Srirangam: the temple has seven enclosures; give yourself at least two hours. Paid sevas and the quicker paid queue are sold at the counters inside. The Thayar (Ranganayaki) shrine is visited after Perumal by tradition.
  • Brihadeeswarar: the evening is the best time, when the stone has cooled, the vimana glows in the low sun and the sanctum reopens. Pradosham evenings, with abhishek to the great Nandi, draw large crowds.
  • Phones: Tamil Nadu temples do not allow mobile phones inside the sanctum areas; use the deposit counters.
  • Dress: veshti or trousers and shirt for men; saree, salwar or long skirt for women.

Festivals to plan around. Vaikunta Ekadasi at Srirangam falls in the Tamil month of Margazhi (late December 2026) and is the year’s greatest event, with the Paramapada Vasal opened at dawn and the 21-day Pagal Pathu–Ra Pathu festival around it; crowds are enormous and rooms are booked months ahead. At Thanjavur, the Sadhaya Vizha marking Rajaraja Chola’s birth star falls in October–November. Panguni Uthiram (March–April) is also busy at Srirangam.

Is this yatra right for you?

This yatra suits families who enjoy temple architecture and history as much as darshan, and elders who need short drives and level ground. The demanding parts are the long walks inside Srirangam and the hot stone floors at midday; carry socks for the Big Temple courtyard. Children who enjoy stories of kings and temples love Thanjavur.

It is less suited to yatris who want only Divya Desams with no heritage stops. For that, our Trichy Kumbakonam Divya Desham yatra covers more Vaishnava shrines in five days, and the quiet Nangur Yatra covers eleven village Divya Desams near Sirkazhi. If you have only a weekend, the Tiruchirappalli Yatra keeps you in Trichy.
