Nangur Yatra

3 Days

Highlights & Route

Thirunangur is a village near Sirkazhi in Mayiladuthurai district where eleven of the 108 Divya Desams stand within a radius of a few kilometres. All eleven were sung by Thirumangai Alvar, and every year on the new-moon day of the Tamil month Thai the festival deities of all eleven are carried on Garuda mounts to one spot, an event called the Thirunangur Garuda Sevai. For most of the year, though, these are quiet village temples with a single priest, a tank and a few devotees, and visiting them is a very different experience from the big-city shrines.

This three-day visit keeps you in one hotel at Sirkazhi or Mayiladuthurai and covers the eleven temples over two days in a sensible loop: Thirumanimadam, Thiruvaikunta Vinnagaram, Thiruarimeya Vinnagaram, Thiruthevanarthogai, Thiruvanpurushothamam and Thiruchemponsey on the first day, and Thiruthetriyambalam, Thirumanikkoodam, Thirukkavalampadi, Thiruvellakkulam (Annan Koil) and Thiruppaarththanpalli on the second, with time in between for Sirkazhi’s famous Sattainathar temple and the Thiruvali-Thirunagari temples linked to Thirumangai Alvar’s own life.

The nearest railway station is Sirkazhi (about 8 km), with Mayiladuthurai Junction about 25 km away offering more trains; the nearest airports are Puducherry (about 95 km) and Tiruchirappalli (about 150 km). Because the temples are small and often locked between the morning and evening pujas, our coordinator telephones the priests ahead so that doors are open when you arrive.

Route

Sirkazhi / Puducherry → Thirunangur (Thirumanimadam, Thiruvaikunta Vinnagaram, Thiruarimeya Vinnagaram, Thiruthevanarthogai, Thiruvanpurushothamam, Thiruchemponsey) → Thirunangur (Thiruthetriyambalam, Thirumanikkoodam, Thirukkavalampadi, Thiruvellakkulam, Thiruppaarththanpalli) → Sirkazhi / Puducherry

Good to know before you book

  • The temples are small and usually open roughly 7–11 am and 5–8 pm; several share a single priest, so some waiting is normal. We coordinate timings in advance.
  • The Thirunangur Garuda Sevai falls on Thai Amavasya; in 2027 the festival days are 6–8 February. It is spectacular but crowded, and rooms in Sirkazhi and Mayiladuthurai must be booked months ahead.
  • Roads between the villages are narrow and pass through paddy fields; a small vehicle is used, and the loop involves many short stops rather than long drives.
  • Traditional dress is expected: dhoti or trousers and shirt for men, saree or salwar for women. Photography inside sanctums is not allowed.
  • Archana and other offerings are paid directly at each temple; carry small denomination notes as change is often unavailable.
  • Hotels in Sirkazhi are basic; Mayiladuthurai has a wider choice and is our preferred base unless you want to be closer to the temples.

Darshan, puja and timing notes

The eleven Thirunangur temples are village shrines, usually open from about 7 to 11 am and 5 to 8 pm. Several share one priest who walks or cycles between them, so the order of visits is planned around him, not around the map. Our coordinator calls ahead each day; even so, a ten-minute wait at a locked door is normal and part of the experience.

  • What to offer: an archana with tulasi, flowers or a small garland, paid at each temple. Carry ₹10 and ₹20 notes, as change is rare.
  • Best time of day: start the morning round by 7:30 am and the evening round by 5 pm. The midday heat in the paddy country is draining, and the temples are closed anyway.
  • Dress: veshti or trousers and shirt for men, saree, salwar or long skirt for women. Footwear stays in the vehicle; the temple courtyards are hot by late morning.
  • Pasurams: Thirumangai Alvar’s verses on each temple are part of the Periya Thirumozhi. If you or an elder can recite them, the priests are delighted; many will also recite them for you.

Festivals to plan around. The Thirunangur Garuda Sevai falls around Thai Amavasai, which in 2027 is on 6 February; the eleven utsava murtis on Garuda vahanas and Thirumangai Alvar’s arrival on a hamsa vahana draw devotees from across Tamil Nadu. The Tamil month of Margazhi (mid-December to mid-January) has early-morning Thiruppavai recitation and Vaikunta Ekadasi. Thirumangai Alvar’s own festival is celebrated in the month of Karthigai (November–December), especially at Thiruvali-Thirunagari. Rooms are scarce on all these dates.

Is this yatra right for you?

This is the right yatra for Sri Vaishnava families, for anyone completing the 108 Divya Desams, and for elders who want darshan without crowds or climbing. It is a very easy programme physically; the only effort is getting in and out of the vehicle many times a day in humid heat.

It is not the right choice if you want grand temple architecture, long corridors and big festivals every day, or if you have only a weekend. In that case choose our Tiruchirappalli Kumbakonam Divya Desham yatra, which pairs Srirangam with the Kumbakonam temples, or the Kanchipuram yatra from Chennai, where many Divya Desams sit inside one town.
