Highlights & Route
Ahobilam, in the Nallamala forest of Nandyal district, Andhra Pradesh, is the only Divya Desam where Lord Narasimha is worshipped in nine forms spread across hills, caves and streams. Tradition holds that it was here that Vishnu emerged from the pillar to save Prahlada and slay Hiranyakashipu, and the Ugra Stambham, a split rock high above the upper village, is pointed out as that pillar. The Ahobila Mutt, one of the oldest Sri Vaishnava mutts, has its origin here and maintains the temples.
The nine shrines, the Nava Narasimha, divide between Lower (Diguva) Ahobilam, where the main Prahlada Varada Narasimha temple stands with its tall gopuram, and Upper (Eguva) Ahobilam, about 8 km up the hill, from where forest paths lead to the cave shrines. Three days from Bengaluru give you time for all of them: the roadside shrines on arrival, the Upper Ahobilam trek and the jeep run to the deep-forest shrines on the second day, and a last darshan before the drive back.
This is a pilgrimage with real walking. The trail from Upper Ahobilam to Jwala Narasimha climbs about 4 km over rock and stream, and the forest shrines are reached by jeep over a rough track. Ahobilam has only simple lodges and the Mutt’s guest houses, so expect clean but basic rooms. The reward is a place that still feels wild, where the deity is in a cave and the temple bell echoes off the hills.
Route
Bengaluru → Ahobilam (2 nights; Lower Ahobilam, Upper Ahobilam trek, forest shrines by jeep) → Bengaluru
Good to know before you book
- Bengaluru to Ahobilam is about 320 km by road via Anantapur and Nandyal, seven to eight hours; the nearest railway station is Nandyal, about 70 km, and the nearest airport is Kurnool, about 120 km.
- The forest shrines (Pavana and, by some routes, Bhargava) are inside the Nallamala forest and reached by shared jeeps hired at Upper Ahobilam at a fixed rate per jeep, paid directly. The track is rough and jeeps do not run after dusk or during heavy rain.
- The trek to Jwala Narasimha and the Ugra Stambham crosses streams and boulders; it is closed by forest officials during heavy monsoon rain and the best months are October to February.
- Nandyal district is hot from March to June, with daytime temperatures above 40 degrees; start treks at dawn.
- Ahobilam has no ATM of note and limited mobile network in the upper areas; carry cash for jeep hire, prasadam and offerings.
- The Brahmotsavam (usually February or March) and Narasimha Jayanti (April or May) draw large crowds, and lodges fill up early.
