Highlights & Route
The stretch of the Cauvery between Tiruchirappalli and Kumbakonam has the densest concentration of Divya Desams anywhere, around forty of the 108 within a two-hour drive. This five-day visit is our fuller version of the Trichy–Kumbakonam circuit, with one night at Trichy and three at Kumbakonam, so that the smaller temples around Kumbakonam, which most short tours skip, get proper time. It begins with Srirangam, the largest functioning temple complex in India and the first of the Divya Desams in the Alvars’ hymns, and ends with the Chola masterpieces at Darasuram and Gangaikonda Cholapuram.
From Trichy the yatra covers Srirangam, Thiruvanaikaval (the water lingam of the Pancha Bhoota temples), Uthamar Kovil where Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva are worshipped in one compound, and Thiruvellarai with its swastika-shaped tank. At Kumbakonam the Divya Desams come thick and fast: Sarangapani in the town, Oppiliappan at Thirunageswaram, Nachiyar Kovil at Thirunaraiyur, Thirucherai, Thiruvelliyangudi and Thirukkandiyur, along with the great Shiva temples of Adi Kumbeswarar and Nageswaran and the Mahamaham tank.
The pace is set for families and elderly yatris: temples in the morning and evening sessions, lunch and rest in between, and never more than about 60 km of driving in a day once we reach Kumbakonam. Trichy has an airport with flights from Chennai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad, and a major railway junction, so the yatra starts and ends there.

- Kumbakonam’s Mahamaham festival, held once in twelve years, is next due in 2028; the 2027 season will see preparation works around the tank.

- Traditional dress is expected at Srirangam and Oppiliappan; shorts and sleeveless tops are not allowed. Phones and cameras are banned inside sanctums.
