Between Thoothukudi and Tirunelveli, along the lower course of the Thamirabarani river, lie nine Vishnu temples known together as the Nava Tirupathi. All nine are Divya Desams sung by Nammalvar, who was born at Alwarthirunagari in their midst, and in later tradition each temple came to be linked with one of the nine planets, so the circuit is also walked as a Navagraha pilgrimage. Add the two Divya Desams south of Tirunelveli, Thirukkurungudi and Nanguneri, and you have eleven of the 108 within a 60 km radius.

This five-day visit uses Thoothukudi for the first two nights and Tirunelveli for the last two. One full day is given to the Nava Tirupathi loop, which runs roughly east to west along the river from Srivaikuntam to Alwarthirunagari and the twin temples of Irattai Tirupathi. The Tirunelveli days cover the Nellaiappar Shiva temple with its musical pillars and the two hill-foot Divya Desams at Thirukkurungudi and Nanguneri, with the evening markets of Tirunelveli (and its famous halwa) for the end of the day.

Thoothukudi has a small airport with flights from Chennai and Bengaluru, and both towns are on the railway from Chennai via Madurai. The yatra is planned for yatris who arrive at Thoothukudi and leave from Tirunelveli, but it can be run in reverse or as a round trip from either town.

Good to know before you book

The nine temples of the Nava Tirupathi are Srivaikuntam (Sun), Natham/Thiruvaragunamangai (Moon), Thirupuliyangudi (Mercury), Alwarthirunagari (Jupiter), Thirukkolur (Mars), Thentiruperai (Venus), Perungulam/Thirukkulandai (Saturn) and the twin temples at Tholaivillimangalam known as Irattai Tirupathi (Rahu and Ketu).
Most are small village temples open roughly 7–12 noon and 4–8 pm; the full loop is about 70 km of driving with nine stops, so we start by 7 am.
The Nava Tirupathi Garuda Sevai is held in the month of Vaikasi (May–June), when all nine processional deities gather at Alwarthirunagari; it is a fine time to visit but hot and crowded.
Nellaiappar temple’s musical pillars and the Thamirabarani ghats are best seen in the evening; the temple closes at midday.
Traditional dress is expected in all temples; carry small cash for archana at each of the nine shrines.
The far south is hot most of the year but drier than the coast; October to February is the pleasant season, and the Thamirabarani is in flow after the October–December rains.

Day 1 :

Arrive Thoothukudi

Our representative meets you at Thoothukudi airport or railway station at your arrival point (airport, railway station or hotel) at the agreed time and takes you to the hotel. The rest of the day is kept easy to recover from the journey. In the evening you may wish to visit the Shrine Basilica of Our Lady of Snows near the harbour or walk along the sea front; those who prefer a temple can visit the Thiruchendur Murugan temple (about 40 km south) if they arrive early, at extra vehicle cost. Dinner at the hotel.

Day 2 :

The Nava Tirupathi circuit

We leave at 7 am with breakfast packed. The loop begins at Srivaikuntam (Vaikuntanathar, linked to the Sun), about 30 km away, then follows the river: Natham for Vijayasana Perumal (Moon), Thirupuliyangudi for Kaisina Vendhan (Mercury), and Alwarthirunagari for Adinathar (Jupiter), where the tamarind tree under which Nammalvar is said to have sat in silence still stands in the temple. After a simple lunch (own cost) at Alwarthirunagari we continue to Thirukkolur (Vaithamanidhi, Mars), Thentiruperai (Makara Nedunkuzhaikathar, Venus), Perungulam (Srinivasa Perumal of Thirukkulandai, Saturn) and finally the twin temples of Devapiran and Aravindalochanar at Tholaivillimangalam, the Irattai Tirupathi, for Rahu and Ketu. Some temples may be visited in the evening session if we run late. Return to Thoothukudi for dinner.

Day 3 :

Thoothukudi to Tirunelveli, Nellaiappar temple

After breakfast we drive about 50 km to Tirunelveli and check in. Later in the afternoon we visit the Nellaiappar temple, a twin complex of Shiva as Nellaiappar and the Goddess as Kanthimathi joined by a chain mandapam, with pillars that ring musical notes when tapped and a thousand-pillared hall. We also see the Thamirabarani river ghats nearby and, in the evening, the lanes around the temple where Tirunelveli's wheat halwa is sold. Dinner at the hotel.

Day 4 :

Thirukkurungudi and Nanguneri

After breakfast we drive south about 45 km to Thirukkurungudi, at the foot of the Western Ghats, for darshan of Nambi (Azhagiya Nambi) in a temple known for its sculpted pillars; it has five forms of the deity including one on the hill above. We return via Nanguneri, where the Vanamamalai (Thothadri Nathar) temple is one of the few where the deity is bathed in oil that is collected in a pit and given as prasadam. Lunch (own cost) at Nanguneri or back in Tirunelveli. The evening is free for rest or shopping. Dinner at the hotel.

Day 5 :

Departure

After breakfast and check-out we drop you at Tirunelveli Junction or drive back to Thoothukudi airport (about an hour) at your departure point (airport, railway station or hotel). If your departure is in the evening, Thiruchendur or the Krishnapuram Venkatachalapathy temple (famous for its life-size sculptures, 10 km from Tirunelveli) can be added at extra cost.

What is the Nava Tirupathi?

Nine Vishnu temples along the Thamirabarani between Thoothukudi and Tirunelveli, all sung by Nammalvar and all among the 108 Divya Desams. In later tradition each is associated with one of the Navagrahas, so the circuit is also done as a planetary pilgrimage.

Can all nine be visited in one day?

Yes. The loop is about 70 km and we start by 7 am, visiting five temples before the midday closure and the rest after 4 pm if needed. Our coordinator confirms the opening times with the priests a day earlier.

How do we reach Thoothukudi from north India?

Fly to Chennai or Bengaluru and take a connecting flight to Thoothukudi (TCR), or fly to Madurai (about 150 km) and we can arrange a pickup at extra cost. Trains from Chennai Egmore reach Thoothukudi and Tirunelveli overnight.

Is Thiruchendur included?

Not in the standard plan, but the Murugan temple at Thiruchendur is only 40 km from Thoothukudi and can be added on Day 1 or Day 5 at extra vehicle cost, or as an extra night.

Is this yatra suitable for senior citizens?

Yes. There are no hill climbs (the hill shrine at Thirukkurungudi is optional and not visited by most yatris) and distances are short. The main consideration is the long Day 2; we keep the vehicle air-conditioned and build in rest stops.

When is the Garuda Sevai here?

In the Tamil month of Vaikasi (May–June), when the processional deities of all nine temples are brought to Alwarthirunagari on Garuda vahanas. Dates for 2027 will be fixed by the temple calendar; ask us if you want to plan around it.

Should we carry cash for the Nava Tirupathi temples?

Yes, carry small notes. The nine Nava Tirupathi shrines on Day 2 are mostly small village temples, and many families offer archana at each one; archana, prasad and dakshina are paid directly to the priests and are not in the package. We coordinate with the priests so the smaller shrines are open when we arrive. Lunch that day is a simple meal at Alwarthirunagari at your own cost.
