Kanchipuram Yatra

3 Days

Highlights & Route

Kanchipuram, about 75 km south-west of Chennai, is one of the seven mokshapuris of Hindu tradition and holds fifteen Divya Desams within and around a town you can cross in twenty minutes. That density is what makes this short yatra so rewarding: in two days you can have darshan at a dozen shrines that would otherwise take weeks to reach, and still have time to sit in the shade of a mandapam or watch silk being woven.

The yatra divides the town into its two historic halves. Vishnu Kanchi, around the Varadaraja Perumal temple with its hundred-pillared hall, is covered on the first afternoon together with Ashtabhujakaram and Thiruvelukkai. Shiva Kanchi, around the Ekambaranathar temple and its 3,500-year-old mango tree, and the Kamakshi Amman temple at the town’s heart, is the focus of day two, along with the Divya Desams tucked inside and beside them: Nilathingal Thundam, Thirukkalvanur, Thiruvekka, Thiru Ooragam and the Pallava-era Vaikuntha Perumal temple.

We pick you up from Chennai airport or Kanchipuram railway station, and the whole yatra stays in one hotel, so there is no daily packing. The pace suits elderly yatris: temples are visited in the morning and late-afternoon opening windows, with a rest during the midday closure.

Route

Chennai → Kanchipuram (Varadaraja Perumal, Ashtabhujakaram, Thiruvelukkai, Thiruthanka) → Kanchipuram (Thiruvekka, Kamakshi Amman, Ekambaranathar, Ulagalantha Perumal, Vaikuntha Perumal, Pandava Dhoothar) → Chennai

Good to know before you book

  • Almost all Kanchipuram temples close around noon and reopen about 4 pm. Our plan uses mornings and evenings for darshan and the midday break for lunch and rest.
  • The Varadaraja Perumal temple’s famous Athi Varadar wooden image is displayed only once in 40 years (last in 2019); on normal days you see the main stone deity.
  • Several Divya Desams here are small shrines inside larger temples (for example, Nilathingal Thundam inside Ekambaranathar and Thirukkalvanur inside Kamakshi Amman); our coordinator will point them out so none is missed.
  • Modest dress is expected; dhoti or trousers and shirt for men, saree or salwar for women. Phones and cameras are not allowed inside most sanctums.
  • Kanchipuram silk is sold at government and cooperative showrooms as well as private shops; we take you to shops only if you ask, and you are under no obligation to buy.

Darshan, puja and timing notes

Almost every temple in Kanchipuram opens early in the morning (about 5.30–6 am), closes from around noon to 4 pm, and reopens until about 8–8.30 pm. The Kamakshi Amman temple keeps roughly 5.30 am to noon and 4 pm to 8 pm, with late darshan on full-moon nights. Our plan follows these windows: darshan in the morning and evening, rest at the hotel in between.

  • Varadaraja Perumal: climb the 24 steps of Hastigiri for the main deity; the golden and silver lizards on the ceiling are touched for a small fee.
  • Ekambaranathar: six worship services a day; this is the Prithvi (earth) linga of the Pancha Bhoota sthalas, and the ancient mango tree in the inner prakaram is part of the darshan.
  • Kamakshi Amman: the Goddess is seated in padmasana; the Sri Chakra installed by Adi Shankara is before her. Fridays are the most auspicious and the most crowded.
  • Dress: traditional clothes; phones and cameras stay outside most sanctums.

Festivals to plan around: Vaikunta Ekadasi in Margazhi (expected around 20 December 2026; confirm with the temple), when the paramapada vasal is opened at the Vishnu temples; Kamakshi’s Brahmotsavam in Masi (February–March); Panguni Uthiram at Ekambaranathar (March–April); and the Garuda Sevai of Varadaraja’s Vaikasi Brahmotsavam (May–June), the biggest day in Vishnu Kanchi.

Is this yatra right for you?

Yes, if you want many Divya Desams with very little travel. Everything is within a few kilometres of one hotel, floors are level, and the midday rest makes the pace gentle for senior citizens. Stone floors get very hot by late morning, so carry socks or a cloth. Children may find a dozen temples in two days too many; we can shorten Day 2. Yatris following the Sri Vaishnava tradition often ask for time to recite the Divya Prabandham pasurams at each Divya Desam; tell us and the coordinator will build it in.

It is not the right yatra if you also want Tirupati or Srirangam on the same journey; for those, see our Chennai Tirupati Divya Desham Yatra (4N/5D, which passes Thiruputkuzhi near Kanchi) or the Tiruchirappalli Yatra (2N/3D) for the Srirangam Divya Desams. Getting there and nearby tirthas

Chennai airport is about 70 km away, around two hours by road; Kanchipuram has its own railway station and Chengalpattu junction is about 35 km away. With extra time, three additions work well:

  • Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham: the Shankara Math in town, for darshan of the Acharya’s adhishtanam.
  • Thiruputkuzhi and Thiruvallur: Vijayaraghava Perumal and Veeraraghava Perumal, both Divya Desams on the road towards Chennai.
  • Mamallapuram: the Sthalasayana Perumal Divya Desam and the Pallava shore temple, about 65 km east.
