Highlights & Route
Tiruchirappalli, or Trichy, sits where the Cauvery splits around the island of Srirangam, and within 25 km of the city are five of the 108 Divya Desams. This short three-day visit is for yatris who want Srirangam darshan done properly, with time for the other Vishnu temples of the city and the landmark Rock Fort, but who cannot spare a week for the whole Cauvery delta.
Day one is given to the island: Srirangam itself, with its seven walls and 21 gopurams, and the Thiruvanaikaval Jambukeswarar temple next door, followed by the Rock Fort at sunset for those who want the climb. Day two circles the mainland temples: Uraiyur’s Kamalavalli Nachiyar temple in the old Chola capital, Uthamar Kovil where the three gods share one compound, Thiruvellarai on its rocky hillock to the north and Anbil, the Sundararaja Perumal temple on the Kollidam, to the east.
Everything is within short driving distance and the hotel stays the same for both nights. The yatra starts and ends at Trichy airport or junction, both well connected to Chennai, Bengaluru and Madurai, and works well as a long weekend from anywhere in south India or as a first leg before Kumbakonam, Thanjavur or Rameswaram.

Good to know before you book
- Srirangam temple is open in the morning and again from about 4 pm; the Rajagopuram, 73 m high, is best photographed from outside as cameras are not allowed within the inner enclosures.
- The Rock Fort climb is about 400 steps cut into an 83 m rock, with the Thayumanaswamy temple midway and the Ucchi Pillayar Ganesha shrine on top; it is optional and takes about an hour.
- Traditional dress is required at Srirangam; shorts and sleeveless tops are refused at the entrance.
- Vaikunta Ekadasi (December–January) is Srirangam’s great festival, when the Paramapada Vasal gate is opened; it is deeply moving but darshan can take many hours and hotels fill early.
- Trichy is hot from March to June; October to February is the comfortable season.
Darshan, puja and timing notes
Unlike most Tamil Nadu temples, Srirangam does not shut for the whole afternoon. It is open from about 6 am to 9 pm, with short breaks for puja (around noon to 1.15 pm and around 6 to 6.45 pm) when darshan stops. The Viswaroopa seva at opening and the first hours after it are the calmest. A paid quick-darshan ticket is sold at the counter; general darshan is free.
- Srirangam: allow two to three hours. Ranganatha reclines on Adisesha; the utsava murti, Namperumal, is seen in a separate mandapam. Cameras are not allowed in the inner enclosures.
- Thiruvanaikaval: the Jambukeswarar linga is the water (Appu) sthala of the Pancha Bhoota temples; a spring keeps the sanctum floor wet. At the noon puja the priest worships dressed as the Goddess Akilandeswari, a rare sight worth timing for.
- Rock Fort: the Ucchi Pillayar shrine at the top is best at sunset; the climb has about 400 steps, with the Thayumanaswamy temple halfway.
- Dress: dhoti or trousers and shirt for men, saree or salwar for women; shorts are refused at Srirangam.
Festivals to plan around: Vaikunta Ekadasi is Srirangam’s greatest day, the high point of a 21-day festival (Pagal Pathu and Ra Pathu). In this cycle it is expected around 20 December 2026; the Paramapada Vasal opens before dawn and darshan can take many hours. Panguni Uthiram (March–April) and the Chithirai chariot festival (April–May) are also crowded. Trichy is hot from March to June.
Is this yatra right for you?
This is a gentle three-day yatra on level ground, staying in one hotel, with short drives and a midday rest. Senior citizens and children are comfortable; Srirangam’s long corridors are the main walking, and the Rock Fort climb is optional. It suits a long weekend from Chennai or Bengaluru, or a first leg before the temples of the Cauvery delta.
It is too short if you want Kumbakonam, Thanjavur and the Divya Desams around them; for that, choose one of the longer yatras below. If you are coming for Vaikunta Ekadasi, tell us early, as hotels fill weeks ahead. To plan dates, use the enquiry form on this page or call/WhatsApp us (numbers on our Contact page).
