Highlights & Route
Between Badrinath and Haridwar the Alaknanda river is joined by five tributaries, and each meeting point is a prayag, a bathing place sanctified by tradition. From the top of the valley downward they are Vishnuprayag, where the Dhauliganga joins near Joshimath; Nandprayag, with the Nandakini; Karnaprayag, where the Pindar arrives from the Kumaon side; Rudraprayag, where the Mandakini comes down from Kedarnath; and Devprayag, where the Bhagirathi from Gangotri meets the Alaknanda and the combined river first takes the name Ganga.
Most Char Dham travellers rush past these confluences. This package does the opposite. Over five days we drive the valley slowly, stopping at each prayag for a bath or a sprinkling of the water, a few minutes at the riverside temple and some quiet time on the ghats. There are no treks and no high passes, which makes it one of the easiest Himalayan yatras for elderly parents, and it is often done as a pind-daan or shraddh journey because Devprayag and Rudraprayag are long-standing places for ancestral rites.
Unlike the Char Dham temples, the prayags are open all year, so this yatra can be taken in any season, although the roads are best avoided in the heaviest monsoon weeks of July and August. Winter brings clear skies and empty ghats, and spring and autumn are mild. If you wish to add Badrinath darshan while at Joshimath, we can extend the plan when the temple is open.
Route
Haridwar → Rishikesh → Devprayag → Srinagar → Rudraprayag → Karnaprayag → Nandprayag → Chamoli → Joshimath → Vishnuprayag → Joshimath → Rudraprayag → Devprayag → Haridwar
Good to know before you book
- Daily drives are between three and eight hours on hill roads; the longest is the return from Joshimath to Haridwar on day four.
- The ghats at Devprayag and Rudraprayag have steep steps down to the water. Non-slip sandals and a helping hand for elders are useful.
- River currents are strong at the confluences, especially in May–June and the monsoon. Bathe only at the chained bathing spots and never alone.
- Joshimath sits at around 1,900 metres and nights are cool even in summer; carry a light woollen.
- Pandits for shraddh or pind-daan are available at Devprayag and Rudraprayag; their dakshina is paid directly and is not part of the package.
- Char Dham registration is not needed for this itinerary unless you add Badrinath darshan.
Darshan, puja and timing notes
The five prayags are river ghats, not temples with gates, so they are open at all hours. The riverside temples beside them follow simple village hours: open from early morning, a rest in the afternoon, and an evening aarti around dusk. Our plan reaches each confluence in daylight, which matters more than any temple timing because the steps down to the water are steep.
- Devprayag: the Raghunath temple above the sangam is the main shrine; the pandas of Devprayag have long been family purohits for Badrinath yatris and keep genealogy records. A short evening aarti is held at the sangam ghat; ask locally for the day’s time.
- Rudraprayag: the Rudranath temple stands at the Alaknanda–Mandakini meeting point; it is a traditional place for shraddh and for a puja before the Kedarnath yatra.
- Karnaprayag and Nandprayag: the Uma Devi temple at Karnaprayag and the Gopalji temple at Nandprayag are small and peaceful; mornings are best.
- Snan: take only a sprinkle or a dip holding the chains. In May–June snowmelt and in the monsoon, the current at every prayag is dangerous.
Season notes for 2026. Badrinath closes for winter on 16 November 2026 at 9:37 pm. After that, the yatra continues to the winter seats: the Narsingh temple at Joshimath (already in our Day 3) and Yogdhyan Badri at Pandukeshwar. So this yatra works well in winter as a darshan of the winter gaddi, with clear skies and empty ghats. The 2027 Badrinath opening date is announced on Basant Panchami; we will update it here.
Is this yatra right for you?
There is no trekking and Joshimath, at about 1,900 m, is the highest night, so this is one of the gentlest Himalayan yatras for senior citizens. The effort is in the hill drives, three to eight hours a day, and the steps at Devprayag and Rudraprayag. It is a good choice for families performing shraddh or asthi visarjan, as both towns have purohits.
If your sankalp is Badrinath darshan itself, choose our Badrinath Dham Yatra or the slower Badrinath with Joshimath plan, both of which pass all five prayags on the way. If you want the five Badris along this same valley, the Panch Badri Yatra is the natural partner. Read our Badrinath yatra guide or the Hindi Badrinath page for timings.
