Highlights & Route

Badrinath is the Vishnu dham of the Himalayan Char Dham and one of the four great dhams of India, so a visit here counts twice over for many families. This four-day programme is built for those who want only Badrinath, done without hurry: two days up through the prayags of the Alaknanda, a full evening and morning at the temple, and two days back down. Night halts at Rudraprayag on both sides break the roughly 320 km from Haridwar into manageable drives.

The route itself is part of the pilgrimage. You pass Devprayag, where the Alaknanda and Bhagirathi meet to become the Ganga, then Rudraprayag, Karnaprayag and Nandaprayag, each a confluence with its own small temple. Beyond Joshimath the road climbs past Vishnuprayag to the valley where Badri Vishal sits at about 3,100 m under the Neelkanth peak. Beyond the temple lies Mana, the last Indian village before the Tibet border, with Vyas Gufa, Ganesh Gufa and the Bheem Pul over the Saraswati.

The temple opens each year in late April or early May, on a date announced on Basant Panchami, and closes for winter after Diwali, when the deity’s winter seat is the Narsingh temple at Joshimath, which we also visit. Our vehicle is private to your group, so you stop when you want to, and our Dehradun team is a phone call away for the whole yatra.

Route

Haridwar → Devprayag → Srinagar → Rudraprayag → Karnaprayag → Nandaprayag → Joshimath → Vishnuprayag → Badrinath → Mana → Badrinath → Joshimath → Rudraprayag → Haridwar / Rishikesh

Good to know before you book

  • Uttarakhand requires every Char Dham pilgrim to register in advance on the state tourism portal (registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in) or app. We help you do it, and you carry the registration on your phone.
  • The 2027 opening date will be announced on Basant Panchami (early 2027); the season normally runs from late April or early May to around Diwali. We will confirm dates when you enquire.
  • Each driving day is 6 to 7 hours on hill roads. Carry motion-sickness tablets, and allow for traffic holds near Joshimath during peak season (May to June).
  • Badrinath is at about 3,100 m and nights are cold even in summer. Pack woollens, a cap and a rain layer for every month.
  • Mobile phones are not allowed inside the temple. Photography of the sanctum is prohibited.
  • The price shown is per person on sharing basis for a standard group; it changes with group size, hotel category and season.

Darshan, puja and timing notes

Badrinath’s day begins before dawn with the Maha Abhishek and Abhishek pujas, booked in advance through the temple committee, and general darshan follows through the morning. The temple closes for a few hours in the early afternoon and reopens in the afternoon until the late-evening Shayan aarti. Exact timings shift through the season, so we confirm them the evening before.

  • Before darshan: by custom, yatris bathe in Tapt Kund, the hot spring below the temple, and then climb the steps to the Singhdwar.
  • Best time: the first hours of morning darshan and the evening session after 6 pm, when day visitors from Joshimath have left.
  • Brahma Kapal: on the Alaknanda bank just below the temple, this is one of the most important places in India for pind daan and shraddh. Families who wish to perform it should tell us at booking so we keep the morning free.
  • Prasad: chana dal, mishri and tulsi are the traditional offerings, sold at stalls on the temple steps.
  • Not allowed: phones and photography inside the temple.

Season and dates: both temples close for winter in the Diwali–November period; Kedarnath customarily closes on Bhai Dooj and Badrinath a little later in November, on dates fixed by the temple committee. The 2027 opening dates are not yet announced. By custom, Badrinath’s date is declared on Basant Panchami (11 February 2027) and Kedarnath’s on Mahashivratri (6 March 2027), with both temples usually opening in late April or early May. The 2026 season opened at Badrinath on 23 April.

Within the season, May–June brings the heaviest crowds and traffic holds near Joshimath; July–August is monsoon, with landslide risk on the highway; September–October offers clear skies and thinner queues.

Is this yatra right for you?

Badrinath is the easiest of the Himalayan dhams. There is no trek: the vehicle reaches the town and the walk to the temple is short, though with some steps and a slope at about 3,100 m. Most senior citizens manage comfortably if they walk slowly and keep warm. The real demand is two days of 6 to 7 hour hill drives each way.

If the long drives worry you, our Badrinath Dham Yatra with Joshimath (3N/4D) uses two nights at Joshimath for a gentler climb, and the same-day helicopter yatra avoids the road altogether. If you want Kedarnath too, choose the Do Dham Yatra by Road (5N/6D); for all five Badri temples, the Panch Badri Yatra (4N/5D). Our guide for senior citizens explains health checks and packing. Getting there and nearby tirthas

Haridwar and Rishikesh are the starting railheads; Jolly Grant airport at Dehradun is about 20 km from Rishikesh. Around Badrinath, Charan Paduka (a short walk up the hill, with the footprints of Vishnu) and the Mata Murti temple at Mana, which holds its fair on Vaman Dwadashi in September, add meaning to the visit. Hindi readers can see our बद्रीनाथ धाम यात्रा page.

Yatra Highlights

  • Darshan of Badri Vishal, Tapt Kund hot spring bath and evening aarti
  • Mana village, Vyas Gufa and Bheem Pul, the last stop before the border
  • Devprayag and the prayags of the Alaknanda on the drive, with Narsingh temple at Joshimath
