Divya Desam Yatra at a glance

The Divya Desams are 108 temples of Lord Vishnu praised in the Tamil hymns of the twelve Alvar saints, collected as the Nalayira Divya Prabandham. 106 are on earth, 105 in India and one, Muktinath, in Nepal; two are celestial. Most are in Tamil Nadu (84) and Kerala (11). Our yatras cover clusters of them in 3 to 5 days from Trichy, Chennai, Kochi, Thoothukudi, Sirkazhi, Bengaluru and Lucknow. There is no trekking except at Ahobilam. October to February is the best season. We plan each circuit from Dehradun with stays, vehicle and temple-hour planning.

Which Divya Desam yatra is right for you?

Begin with Srirangam, the first and foremost Divya Desam, on the short Trichy yatra or one of the Trichy and Kumbakonam circuits. If you live near Chennai or want Tirumala darshan, choose Kanchipuram or the Chennai and Tirupati yatra. Devotees counting their Divya Desams one by one often go next to the Nava Tirupathi near Tirunelveli, the eleven Thirunangur temples, and the Malainadu temples of Kerala.

Temple timings and darshan tips

  • Two darshan windows a day. Most Tamil Nadu temples close between roughly noon and 4 pm, and Kerala temples by about 11 am, reopening around 5 pm. We plan drives and meals in the midday gap.
  • Dress code. Dhoti or trousers with a shirt for men, saree or salwar for women, in Tamil Nadu. In Kerala men remove their shirts and wear a mundu, and women wear a saree or set-mundu. Shorts and sleeveless tops are refused.
  • Phones and cameras are not allowed in most sanctums. Several Kerala Divya Desams admit Hindus only.
  • Small shrines, shared priests. In Kanchipuram, Thirunangur and the Nava Tirupathi, several Divya Desams are small shrines, some inside larger temples. Our coordinator makes sure none is missed and carries small change for archana.
  • Tirumala. Special Entry Darshan and free Sarva Darshan slots are booked on the official TTD portal (ttdevasthanams.ap.gov.in) in each yatri's name with ID. Slots go fast, so book as soon as dates are fixed.

Best season and festivals

October to February is the most comfortable season across Tamil Nadu and Kerala. March to June is very hot inland, and the Kerala monsoon brings heavy rain from June to August. Some festivals are worth planning around, though crowds are heavy:

  • Vaikunta Ekadasi (December–January): the Paramapada Vasal opens at Srirangam and other Vishnu temples. Darshan can take many hours and Trichy hotels fill weeks ahead.
  • Thirunangur Garuda Sevai around Thai Amavasai, in early February in 2027, when the eleven deities gather on Garuda vahanas.
  • Nava Tirupathi Garuda Sevai in the Tamil month of Vaikasi (May–June) at Alwarthirunagari.
  • Mahamaham at Kumbakonam is held once in twelve years and is next due in 2028.

What we arrange

  • Private vehicle with a local driver who knows the village temples and their timings.
  • Hotels in the best available category in each base town; temple towns such as Sirkazhi and Ahobilam have simple stays.
  • South Indian vegetarian meals, and a day plan built around opening hours.
  • Guidance on Tirumala ticket booking, dress code and archana at each temple.
  • For North Indian yatris, help joining these circuits with trains or flights from Delhi or Dehradun.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Divya Desam?

A Divya Desam is one of 108 Vishnu temples glorified in the Nalayira Divya Prabandham, the 4,000 Tamil verses of the twelve Alvar saints. Visiting them is a lifelong sankalp for many Sri Vaishnava families. 106 are on earth and two, Thiruparkadal and Paramapadam, are believed to be attained only after this life.

How many Divya Desams are in Tamil Nadu?

Tamil Nadu has 84 of the 108 Divya Desams, the largest share by far. Kerala has 11, Uttar Pradesh 4, Uttarakhand 3, Andhra Pradesh 2, Gujarat 1, and Nepal 1 at Muktinath. Large clusters lie around Srirangam and Kumbakonam, in Kanchipuram, near Sirkazhi at Thirunangur, and along the Thamirabarani near Tirunelveli.

Which is the first Divya Desam?

Srirangam, the Sri Ranganathaswamy temple on an island in the Cauvery at Tiruchirappalli, is counted first among the Divya Desams. It is one of the largest functioning Hindu temples, with seven enclosures and a Rajagopuram about 73 m high. Allow two to three hours for darshan.

How many days are needed to cover all 108 Divya Desams?

Covering all 106 earthly Divya Desams usually takes several separate yatras spread over months or years, because they are scattered from Kerala to Nepal. The Tamil Nadu temples alone take three to four weeks of steady travel. Most families complete them cluster by cluster, which is how our 3 to 5 day circuits are designed.

What is the best time for a Divya Desam yatra?

October to February is the best time, with cooler weather in Tamil Nadu and drier days in Kerala. Avoid April to June if heat troubles you. Vaikunta Ekadasi in December or January is the most sacred time at Srirangam, but darshan takes many hours and hotels need booking weeks ahead.

Is the Divya Desam yatra suitable for senior citizens?

Yes, most circuits are by road with short walks inside temples, and we plan rest during the midday closure. The exceptions are Ahobilam, where the upper shrines involve forest jeeps and a rough trek, and the optional hill climb at Sholinghur. Tell us about any mobility needs so we can plan accordingly.
