The kapat of Shri Badrinath Dham in Chamoli district, Uttarakhand, will close for the winter at 9:37 pm on Monday, 16 November 2026. The muhurat was fixed on Vijayadashami, 20 October 2026, at a ceremony at the temple attended by the Rawal (chief priest) Amarnath Namboodiri, the Dharmadhikari and the Vedpathis, and announced by the Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee (BKTC). Badrinath is the last of the four dhams to close, and its ceremonial utsav doli is scheduled to leave for the winter seats on 17 November.
Where Badri Vishal is worshipped in winter
When Badrinath closes, worship moves down the Alaknanda valley. Going by the practice confirmed at last year’s closing, on 25 November 2025:
| Deity or seat | Winter location |
|---|---|
| Shri Uddhav ji and Shri Kuber ji | Pandukeshwar |
| Gaddi (throne) of Adi Guru Shankaracharya | Shri Narsingh temple, Jyotirmath (Joshimath) |
| Rawal ji | Winter residence at Pandukeshwar / Jyotirmath |
In 2025 the Shankaracharya gaddi reached the Narsingh temple two days after the closing. The exact 2026 programme for the doli’s halts will be released by the temple committee closer to the date. On 20 October the BKTC also presented the ceremonial pagdi to the representatives who will manage temple provisions for the 2027 season, a sign that preparation for next year starts even before this one ends.
What it means for yatris
- Badrinath is open longest: Kedarnath, Gangotri and Yamunotri all close by 11 November, but Badrinath stays open until the night of 16 November. A short late-season Badrinath darshan is still possible in the first half of November.
- Expect real cold: Badrinath is at about 3,130 m. November nights are below freezing and early snow can close the road for some hours. Keep one buffer day and carry heavy woollens.
- Winter darshan: after the closing, yatris can visit Pandukeshwar and the Narsingh temple at Jyotirmath, both on the Rishikesh–Badrinath highway and reachable by road through the winter.
- 2027 opening: not yet announced. By tradition the date is declared on Basant Panchami (11 February 2027) at the Narendranagar royal palace in Tehri. Wait for that before booking non-refundable travel.
