Highlights & Route
Prayagraj, the Tirtharaj or king of pilgrimage places, is built around a single point: the Sangam, where the brown Ganga and the greener Yamuna meet and, by tradition, the unseen Saraswati joins them. A dip here is the goal of every yatri who comes, and this one-day visit is arranged so that it happens first, in the morning, when the river is calm and the ghats are quiet. The rest of the day fills in the circle of temples and historic places around the Sangam and the Akbar fort.
After the snan you visit the Bade Hanuman Mandir beneath the fort walls, where the reclining Hanuman image lies below ground level and is, by tradition, touched by the Ganga in flood each year. Alopi Devi, the Shakti Peeth where no idol is worshipped, only a wooden cradle, is a short drive away. Inside the fort enclosure stand the Patalpuri underground temple and the Akshayavat, the undying banyan tree. The Mankameshwar Mahadev temple on the Yamuna completes the morning.
The afternoon turns to history: Anand Bhavan and Swaraj Bhavan, the Nehru family homes that are now museums, and a drive past the High Court and the university buildings of the old civil lines. The yatra ends with a riverside stroll and your drop at the railway station, airport or hotel. A private AC vehicle and our local coordinator are with you all day; meals, boat and entry tickets are paid directly.

Good to know before you book
- Boat fares at the Sangam are fixed by the administration and displayed at the ghat; our coordinator helps you hire a licensed boat and avoid overcharging.
- The Magh Mela (January–February) and Kumbh or Ardh Kumbh years bring tens of lakhs of pilgrims; on those dates vehicles are stopped far from the Sangam and the yatra becomes a walking day.
- Anand Bhavan is closed on Mondays and has a modest entry ticket; the Patalpuri temple inside the fort is open to the public while the rest of the fort is an army area.
- Carry a change of clothes and a towel for the snan; simple changing enclosures are available at the ghat.
- Alopi Devi has no idol; pilgrims offer prayers to a wooden cradle (doli), which surprises first-time visitors.
- October to March is the comfortable season. In the monsoon the river runs high and boats may not go out to the exact confluence point.
Darshan, puja and timing notes
The day is built around the Sangam snan at about 7:30 am, when the river is calm and the boats are not yet crowded. The temples that follow open early and stay open into the evening, with short closures for bhog; the order in our plan keeps you ahead of the midday heat and the Anand Bhavan opening hours.
- Bade Hanuman (Lete Hanuman): the reclining image lies below ground level. In the monsoon, when the Ganga rises into the temple, darshan is limited and the image may be under water; this is regarded as the river’s own abhishek.
- Akshayavat and Patalpuri: inside the fort, which is an army area, only the public section is open. The Akshayavat was opened for public darshan in 2019 after being out of reach for a long time; carry ID and expect a security check.
- Alopi Devi: there is no idol, only a wooden doli (cradle). Some traditions name the Lalita Devi temple in Prayagraj as the Shakti Peeth instead; we can include both.
- Sangam aarti: held after sunset at the ghats. Add it if your train is late in the evening.
- Anand Bhavan: closed on Mondays. On a Monday we replace it with Lalita Devi or the Allahabad Museum.
Magh Mela 2027. The mela runs from Paush Purnima (22 January 2027) to Maha Shivaratri in early March. The main snan days are Makar Sankranti (14–15 January), Mauni Amavasya (6 February, the largest), Basant Panchami (11 February) and Maghi Purnima (20 February). On these days vehicles stop far from the Sangam and this becomes a walking day; we keep only the snan and Bade Hanuman. The mela administration publishes final routing closer to the time.
Is this yatra right for you?
One day suits yatris passing through Prayagraj by train or combining it with Kashi or Ayodhya. It is easy for seniors and children, with short walks and a calm boat ride. It is not enough if you want Kalpvas, pind daan with full rites, or the evening aarti and a second morning snan; for that, stay two nights on our Kaushambi Prayagraj Yatra. If Prayagraj is one stop in a larger sankalp, our Kashi, Prayagraj and Ayodhya Yatra covers all three tirthas.
How this differs from our other Prayagraj day options

Prayagraj Junction has direct trains from Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai and Varanasi, and the airport at Bamrauli has flights from major cities. Shringverpur, about 40 km up the Ganga, where Nishadraj ferried Shri Ram across the river, makes a fine half-day addition on the morning after this day of darshan.
