Prayagraj Ghat Aarti

1 Day

Highlights & Route

The evening aarti on the Sangam ghats of Prayagraj is quieter and more intimate than the great ceremonies of Varanasi and Haridwar, and that is its charm. Lamps are raised to the river as the sun sets behind the Yamuna bridge, the priests chant, and families sit on the steps with small leaf boats of flowers to float on the water. This one-day plan is shaped so that the aarti is the last thing you do before leaving the city.

The day begins with the essential: a boat to the Triveni Sangam and a holy dip where the Ganga and Yamuna meet. Pilgrims who wish to perform pind daan, tarpan or a sankalp puja can do so at the Sangam with a registered priest. Then the Bade Hanuman Mandir below the fort, with its reclining image, and in the afternoon the Alopi Devi temple, a Shakti Peeth where a cradle is worshipped in place of an idol. A drive through the old city and the civil lines, and free time for lunch and the bazaars, fill the gap before the aarti.

A private AC vehicle and our local coordinator stay with you from the railway station or airport pickup to the drop after the aarti. The boat fare, puja costs and meals are paid directly. The plan suits yatris passing through Prayagraj between Varanasi and Ayodhya, or those arriving by a morning train and leaving by a night one.

Route

Pickup (station/airport) → Triveni Sangam boat, snan and optional puja → Bade Hanuman Mandir → lunch and free time → Alopi Devi → old city and civil lines drive → evening Ganga aarti at the Sangam ghats → drop

Good to know before you book

  • The aarti begins at sunset, so its time moves from about 5.30 pm in winter to after 7 pm in summer; your drop time changes accordingly.
  • Boat fares at the Sangam are fixed and displayed by the administration; use only licensed boats, which our coordinator arranges.
  • Pind daan and tarpan are performed by registered tirth purohits at the Sangam; agree the dakshina before the ritual begins and avoid touts who approach near the parking area.
  • In the Magh Mela (January–February) and in Kumbh years the ghats and roads are restricted and the aarti venue may shift; the plan is adjusted on the day.
  • Carry a towel and a change of clothes for the snan; changing enclosures are available at the ghat.
  • October to March is the best period; monsoon water levels can stop boats from reaching the exact confluence point.

Darshan, puja and timing notes

The evening Ganga aarti at the Sangam ghats begins at sunset: about 5.30 pm in winter and after 7 pm in summer. It lasts around 45 minutes. Plan the morning for snan, when the water is calmer and the boats less crowded, and keep the afternoon light so you are not tired by aarti time.

  • Sangam snan: licensed boats take you to the confluence, where wooden platforms are tied for bathing. Fares are fixed and displayed by the administration.
  • Rituals: pind daan, tarpan, mundan and veni daan (offered by married couples) are performed by registered tirth purohits. Agree dakshina before you begin.
  • Bade Hanuman: the reclining Hanuman is said to be partly submerged when the Ganga floods in monsoon, which devotees regard as Ganga’s own abhishek.
  • Akshayavat and Patalpuri: inside the fort, open to devotees through a corridor; can be added to the morning if the security schedule allows.

Festivals to plan around: the Magh Mela 2027 is listed by Incredible India from 15 January to 6 March 2027. The main snan days are expected to follow the lunar calendar: Makar Sankranti (14–15 January), Mauni Amavasya (6 February), Basant Panchami (11 February), Maghi Purnima (20 February) and Mahashivratri (6 March). On these days vehicles are stopped far from the ghats and the aarti venue may move. Kartik Purnima in November also brings a large snan.

Is this yatra right for you?

This is a light day with a boat ride, short walks and sitting on the ghat steps, so it suits senior citizens and children. Getting in and out of the boat is the only tricky moment; the boatman and our coordinator help. It works best for yatris passing through Prayagraj on a morning train who leave by a night train.

If you would rather finish early and include Anand Bhavan, Akshayavat and more temples, the full-day option fits better. If you want two nights and Lalita Devi Shakti Peeth with Kaushambi, choose the longer yatra. In Magh Mela or Kumbh years, ask us before booking any day plan. To book, use the enquiry form on this page or call/WhatsApp us (numbers on our Contact page).
