Highlights & Route
One night a year, on Kartik Purnima, the whole riverfront of Varanasi is lit with earthen lamps, from Ravidas Ghat at the southern end to Rajghat in the north. The gods are said to come down to bathe in the Ganga that night, and the city welcomes them with more than ten lakh diyas, a grand Ganga Aarti, and in recent years a laser show on the fort wall and fireworks over the river. From the steps you see one ghat; from the water you see all of them at once. This one-day package puts you on a boat in the middle of it.
You arrive in Varanasi in the morning and, if you wish, use the day for darshan at Kashi Vishwanath, Annapurna, Kaal Bhairav and Sankat Mochan, or simply walk the ghats as the lamps are being laid out in patterns on the steps. In the late afternoon you board a large bajra boat with a reserved seat. A pandit on board guides a short Ganga puja and deep daan, in which each guest floats a lamp on the river. The boat then moves slowly along the lit ghats, stops opposite Dashashwamedh for the Maha Aarti, and stays on the water for the laser show and fireworks. Tea and a Kashi snack box are served on board.
The package is priced per seat, so it suits a couple, a family or a small group staying anywhere in Varanasi. Hotel stays are not included because many yatris on this date arrive by morning train and leave by night train; if you want a room, our one-night Dev Deepawali package adds one. We advise booking early, as boat seats on this night are limited by the administration and sell out weeks ahead.
Route
Varanasi (own arrival) → optional morning temple round: Kashi Vishwanath, Annapurna, Kaal Bhairav, Sankat Mochan → afternoon free on the ghats → boarding at Assi or Shivala Ghat (confirmed point sent on WhatsApp) → bajra boat along the lit ghats, deep daan, Maha Aarti, laser show, fireworks → return to boarding ghat → drop at designated point
Good to know before you book
- Dev Deepawali 2026 is on Tuesday, 24 November; in 2027 it falls on Saturday, 13 November. The boat runs only on that evening.
- Boats board in the late afternoon (report by about 4 pm) and return after the fireworks, usually around 9 pm; the exact timing follows the administration’s schedule for the night.
- Roads near the ghats are closed to vehicles from the afternoon; the last stretch to the boarding ghat is on foot through crowded lanes, so wear sturdy footwear and keep children close.
- Life jackets are compulsory on board and passenger numbers per boat are capped on this night; please follow the crew’s instructions.
- The night is cold on the water in late November; carry a shawl or jacket for every member.
- Phones and bags are not allowed inside Kashi Vishwanath if you do the morning darshan; Sugam Darshan tickets are suspended on festival days such as this.
