Prayagraj Sangam Tarpan & Pind Daan (Online)

1 Day

About this puja

Prayagraj, the ancient Prayag, is where the Ganga and the Yamuna meet with the unseen Saraswati at the Triveni Sangam. It is called the Tirth Raj, the king of pilgrim places, and shraddha rites for the departed have been performed on its sands for as long as records exist. Tarpan is the offering of water with til to the ancestors; pind daan is the offering of rice balls that nourish and release them. Families perform these at the Sangam during Pitru Paksha, on the death anniversary (barsi or tithi), on an Amavasya, after asthi visarjan, or whenever an elder’s last wish was for Prayag.

The rites at Prayag have traditionally been in the hands of the Prayagwal purohits, the city’s hereditary tirth priests, whose families have kept registers of visiting yatris for generations. Many families find their own grandparents’ names in these ledgers. Our online service is for those who cannot come: NRI families, elderly yatris, and anyone whose Amavasya or tithi falls at a time they cannot travel.

How the online puja works: you send the names of the departed, their relationship to you, your name and gotra. Our purohit takes sankalp in your name at the Sangam, performs the tarpan and pind daan with the traditional material, offers the pinds to the river and completes the rite with daan. You receive a video, or a live link to watch, and the prasad with your sankalp sheet and a small bottle of Sangam jal is couriered to your Indian address.

Who performs it

The rites are performed by Prayagraj tirth purohits from the Sangam area with whom we have worked for years. They are local, ghat-associated priests; they are not employees of any temple, government body or mela authority, and we do not claim this service is official.

Good to know before you book

  • Tarpan and pind daan can be done at the Sangam on any day of the year. Pitru Paksha (the fortnight before Sharad Navratri, usually in September or October) is the most sought-after period and dates fill early.
  • Every year the Magh Mela is held on the Sangam sands from Paush Purnima (January) to Mahashivratri (February), with very large crowds on the main bathing days; in 2026 it ran from 3 January to 15 February. The rites continue during the mela, but videos may be shorter and timings less flexible on the big snan days. In Kumbh years the mela area is much larger and movement is controlled.
  • During the monsoon (roughly July to September) the rivers rise and the exact spot on the bank changes with the water. The purohit performs the rite wherever the Sangam bank is safe that day.
  • A simple tarpan is done in one sitting; pind daan with the full shraddha usually takes a few hours. Tripindi shraddha and other larger rites are quoted separately.
  • We need the full names of the departed and their relationship to you. For three generations, the tradition names father, grandfather and great-grandfather on both sides where known; if you know only some names, the purohit uses the traditional form for the rest.
  • Prasad and a small bottle of Sangam jal are couriered within India. Liquids and some items are refused by international couriers, so for addresses abroad we send only what customs permits, at extra cost.
