About this puja
Bringing the asthi of a departed parent to the Ganga at Haridwar is one of the oldest duties in a Hindu family, followed by pind daan and tarpan for their peace. Not every family can make the journey in the days after a loss: children settled abroad, elderly spouses, or those whose health does not allow travel. This service lets a family member in India hand over the asthi, or courier them to us, while the full rite is performed at Haridwar in your name and you watch from wherever you are.
Haridwar is where the Ganga enters the plains, and Har Ki Pauri, Kushavarta ghat and Kankhal’s Sati ghat have received the ashes of generations. Kushavarta ghat is particularly known for pind daan, and the Narayani Shila temple is the place for offerings to ancestors who died untimely or whose rites were left incomplete. Haridwar is also where tirth purohits keep the family bahi registers, genealogies arranged by ancestral village and gotra, which are updated when a family comes for asthi visarjan or shradh.
How our online service works: you tell us the name, relation and date of death of the departed, and your family’s ancestral district and gotra so the right purohit family can be found. The asthi reach us by hand or by registered courier. On the agreed date the purohit performs the asthi visarjan at Har Ki Pauri or Kankhal, then pind daan and tarpan at Kushavarta ghat, and where the family wishes, the entry in the bahi. You receive a live link or video, and prasad and the record copy are couriered to you.
Who performs it
The rites are performed by Haridwar tirth purohits, and wherever possible by the purohit family that traditionally serves your ancestral district, so the bahi entry is made in the right register. We are a yatra company in Dehradun, not Shri Ganga Sabha or any temple body, and we claim no official status. Where your family already has its own purohit at Haridwar, tell us and we will arrange the rite through him.
Good to know before you book
- Asthi can be handed to us in Dehradun or Haridwar by a family member, or sent by a reputed courier in a sealed earthen or cloth-wrapped container; we confirm receipt by WhatsApp before the rite is scheduled. International shipping of ashes needs the destination and origin country’s paperwork, which we help you understand.
- The Ganga canal at Har Ki Pauri is closed each autumn from around Dussehra until Diwali (in 2026 until 8 November). In that window visarjan is done at a flowing point of the river rather than at Brahmakund.
- Only natural materials go into the river: the asthi, flowers, leaf lamps. No plastic, cloth or metal is immersed.
- Bahi entry depends on your ancestral district being served by a purohit family at Haridwar; the purohit will ask for your native village, district, caste and gotra. If no register exists for your family, the rite is still complete in every way.
- Pind daan follows the family’s own tradition on timing; the purohit will guide you on the tenth, twelfth or thirteenth day, the monthly or yearly shradh, and Pitru Paksha.
- Prasad and the record copy are couriered within India; abroad at extra cost, dry items only.
