About this puja
Mahakaleshwar of Ujjain is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas and the only one that faces south, which is why Shiva is worshipped here as Mahakal, the Lord of Time who stands beyond death. Every morning before dawn the temple performs the Bhasma Aarti, in which the lingam is adorned with sacred ash. It is the ritual Ujjain is known for, and devotees from across India and abroad travel for a single glimpse of it. Families ask for a puja at Mahakal for long life, freedom from fear, relief in a hard time, and for the departed.
This service is for the yatri who cannot come to Ujjain. Our Ujjain priest performs a Rudrabhishek and puja in your name and gotra on the morning of your chosen date, timed to the hours of the Bhasma Aarti, at his puja place close to the temple on the banks of the Shipra. He takes your sankalp into the temple for darshan afterwards and offers it at Mahakal’s feet. Please read the next section carefully: the Bhasma Aarti itself takes place inside the temple and is governed entirely by the temple committee, so what we offer is a puja and sankalp in its spirit and hours, not a seat inside the aarti.
How the online puja works: you send the names, gotra and intention. The priest takes sankalp, performs the Rudrabhishek with the traditional dravya (milk, curd, honey, ghee, sugar, bel leaves and bhasma), recites the Rudra mantras and performs aarti. You receive a short video, or a live link if you wish to watch before dawn. Prasad, bhasma and your sankalp sheet are couriered to your Indian address.
Who performs it
The puja is performed by Ujjain priests we have worked with for several years. They are local priests associated with the temple town’s puja tradition; they are not employees of the Shri Mahakaleshwar Mandir management, and this service is not run by or on behalf of the temple. We will never sell you a Bhasma Aarti seat or claim we can get one.
Good to know before you book
- Bhasma Aarti entry is by permission from the temple management only, booked on its official website or app in the devotee’s own name with a photo ID. In April 2026 the temple ended offline permissions: general bookings open online about a month ahead and a small same-day-before (tatkal) quota opens online at 8 AM the previous day. Seats sell out within minutes. No agent, including us, can book a seat for you.
- The Bhasma Aarti is performed in the early hours, roughly 4 AM to 6 AM, and permitted devotees report well before that. Our puja is held in the same pre-dawn window so that your sankalp is made at the aarti’s hour.
- Inside the temple a traditional dress code applies for those entering the sanctum area (dhoti or sovala for men, saree for women). This does not affect an online puja, but we mention it for anyone planning to visit later.
- Rituals inside the sanctum, such as the temple’s own abhishek, are booked only through the temple’s official channels, where available. Our Rudrabhishek is performed on a Shiva lingam at the priest’s puja place.
- In Shravan and Bhadrapada, Mahakal’s Sawari processions bring very large crowds to Ujjain. Online puja goes on as usual, but courier dispatch may take a day or two longer.
- Prasad (bhasma, dry prasad, a rudraksha or thread and the sankalp sheet) is couriered within India. For addresses abroad only customs-permitted items can be sent, at extra cost.
