Highlights & Route
Sabarimala is unlike any other temple journey in India. The shrine of Lord Ayyappa stands on a forested hill in the Periyar tiger reserve in Kerala, reached only on foot from the Pamba river. Devotees come after a period of vratham, carrying the irumudi bundle of offerings on their heads, and only those with an irumudi may climb the eighteen sacred steps to the sanctum. For many North Indian families it is a yatra they have heard about for years but never attempted because the rules seemed complicated. This package is built to make it simple.
We begin at Kochi and drive through central Kerala with darshan halts at Chottanikkara Devi, Vaikom Mahadeva and Ettumanoor Mahadeva, then at Erumeli, where Ayyappa devotees traditionally pay respects at both the Sastha temple and the Vavar mosque. The night is spent near Pamba or at the Nilakkal base camp. Before dawn you bathe in the Pamba, and begin the roughly five-kilometre climb to Sannidhanam. After darshan you return, rest, and we drive back to Kochi for a relaxed evening at Fort Kochi.
The climb is the real test of this yatra. It is steep in parts and takes two to four hours depending on fitness, but thousands of elderly devotees complete it every season, and a doli (carried chair) can be hired for those who need it. We help you with the mandatory Virtual-Q booking, explain the irumudi, and plan the days around the temple’s opening calendar.
Route

Good to know before you book
- Sabarimala is not open all year. It opens for the Mandala–Makaravilakku season from mid-November to around 20 January, and otherwise only for the first few days of each Malayalam month and a few festival days; we match your dates to the Travancore Devaswom Board calendar.
- Online Virtual-Q booking on sabarimalaonline.org is mandatory for every pilgrim; we help you register once your dates are fixed.
- By long-standing tradition the temple is not visited by women between the ages of 10 and 50; please check the current Devaswom Board rules with us before you book for a mixed family group.
- Private vehicles stop at Nilakkal during the season; the last 20 km to Pamba is by KSRTC shuttle bus, and the climb from Pamba to Sannidhanam is about 5 km on foot.
- Only devotees carrying the irumudi may use the eighteen steps; others reach the sanctum by the side path. We can arrange the irumudi filling ceremony at Erumeli or Pamba (own cost).
- Devotees traditionally wear black or blue, go barefoot on the hill, and observe a vegetarian vratham before the yatra.
