Highlights & Route
This yatra strings together the southern tip of India in one unbroken line. You land at Madurai, bow to Meenakshi Amman, and are at Rameswaram by evening. Rameswaram is the southern dham of the Char Dham, where Shri Ram is believed to have worshipped Shiva before crossing to Lanka, and a bath in its twenty-two theerthams is the heart of the visit. From there the road turns to Kanyakumari, where three seas meet, and finally to Thiruvananthapuram for darshan of Padmanabhaswamy, the reclining Vishnu of the Travancore kings.
We keep two nights at Rameswaram so that the theertha snanam and darshan can be done early in the morning when the temple is calm, leaving the afternoon for the Pamban bridge, the ghost town of Dhanushkodi and the Kalam memorial. Kanyakumari gets one evening and one sunrise, which is all it needs. Thiruvananthapuram is the finish, with a night in the city so that you are not rushing from the temple to the airport.
The itinerary is comfortable for elderly travellers: drives are three to four hours at most, every temple is reachable by car, and the only climb is a few steps at Dhanushkodi and the ferry gangway at Kanyakumari. Please note that Padmanabhaswamy admits Hindu devotees only and follows a strict dress code, both of which we explain below.
Route
Madurai → Rameswaram (2 nights) → Kanyakumari (1 night) → Thiruvananthapuram (1 night)
Good to know before you book
- Padmanabhaswamy temple permits only Hindus and requires men to wear a mundu (dhoti) without a shirt and women a sari or set-mundu; dhotis can be hired near the gate.
- At Rameswaram the sea bath at Agni Theertham comes first, then the 22 wells inside the temple; carry a change of clothes and a cloth bag for wet garments.
- The ferry to Vivekananda Rock at Kanyakumari runs only when the sea is calm and can be cancelled without notice in rough weather.
- Dhanushkodi is reached by a road that ends at Arichal Munai; vehicles are allowed only until the posted closing time in the late afternoon.
- Most temples on this route close for a long afternoon break (roughly 1 pm to 4 pm); we plan darshans around it.
- Pure vegetarian food is available everywhere on this route; Kerala meals at the finish are served on banana leaf.
